ANNA BALAZOVIC (nee BRASKO) It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Anna Balazovic. Anna passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Seven Oaks Hospital. Anna leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 51 years, Mike, her sons, Michael and Daniel (Kim), and grandchildren Brooklyn, Madison and Lucas. She is also survived by her sister Luda (Stano), as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Pavlina (nee Sedlakova) and Emil Brasko, brother Jerry and sister Martha Kopecka. Anna was born on December 4, 1943 in Sipkove, Slovakia. In 1965 she came to Canada to visit her brother Jerry and met Mike, where they married and started a family. Together she and Mike raised their family on the farm in Oak Bluff. She received her Canadian Citizenship and was very proud to call both Slovakia and Canada home. Anna's first job in Canada was at Manitoba Clothing on Main Street (Kuklica Bros). She went back to school in 1993 to become a health care aide, and in 1994 she graduated and started working at Victoria General Hospital until her retirement in 2004. Anna loved to cook and bake Slovak specialties, and was always researching new recipes. She was a main contributor to the cookbook 'From Our Slovak Kitchen'. In 1979 she was on TV showing the world how to bake her 'Orange Torte Under Glass' cake. In the early 1980s she was on Peter Warren's CJOB radio show in an effort to get Canadian medication to her dying sister in Slovakia. At the time Slovakia was part of communist Czechoslovakia and they did not allow medication to come in from other countries. Canadian medication for breast cancer was more advanced, and Anna's appearance on Peter Warren's radio show raised awareness enough that her sister Martha did receive the medication. Anna was very involved in the Slovak community and a regular volunteer at the Slovak pavilion for Folklorama. She loved taking trips back to 'the old country' (Slovakia), and was always excited to meet new Slovak people that came to Winnipeg for visits or in the process of building a new life. Anna loved dancing, and when she was younger she loved The Beatles, Paul Anka, Tom Jones and also loved folk music. Anna's passion was her family. Anna was a loving mother, loved raising her two sons and watching them play sports, and loved taking her grandchildren out shopping and watching their hockey games. She also loved spending time with her brother Jerry and his family. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue with Father Peter Nemcek officiating. Viewing will be prior to the service. A reception will follow. Anna will be laid to rest in the Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 4000 Portage Avenue following the reception. Pallbearers will be nephews Jerald Brasko, Stephen Kuklica, Trevor Capka, Andre Brasko; cousin Tony Brasko; and Derek Ferreira. The family would like to thank the 4th Floor staff of Seven Oaks Hospital for their care of Anna. The family would also like to thank Bea, Kim and nieces Chrissy, Paulie and Kathy for being with them during Anna's final moments.
