HJORDIS RANDE SANDERS (née LINDBERG) Hjordis Rande Sanders (née Lindberg) died peacefully in Winnipeg on December 31, 2017 at the age of 93. Hjordis is survived by her children, Ralph (Leslie), Patricia and Larraine; her grandchildren, Diana, Paul, Annmarie, Victoria, Nile, Leanne, George, Michael and David; her great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Pat Lindberg; niece and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George Sanders and her brother Ralph Lindberg of Duncan, BC. Hjordis was born in Port Arthur, ON on February 17, 1924. Her parents, Turé from Sweden and Sofie from Norway, had immigrated to Canada just two years prior. Hjordis graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital as a nurse in 1945. She met our father, George Sanders, a civil engineer, working in northern Ontario. They were married in 1950. In the early years, the family moved and lived extensively across Canada, finally settling in Winnipeg in 1962. Unfortunately, her husband George died suddenly in 1968, leaving Hjordis to raise their three children alone. Hjordis returned to work as a nurse at the Children's Hospital and then obtained her nursing degree from the University of Manitoba in 1974. She taught at the Grace Hospital School of Nursing until retiring in 1984. In her retirement, Hjordis loved to travel. She remained physically active. She curled and cross-country skied. She loved to swim in any temperature, be it at her cottage on Lake Winnipeg or the indoor pool at her apartment. Most of all, however, Hjordis loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Hjordis no longer remembered the past events of her life in her final years, but still had a wonderful smile that radiated when she saw her children and grandchildren. We are blessed to have had such a caring and involved mother and grandmother throughout our lives. • Although she lived far from me I felt a deep love and connection to my auntie Hjordis. She was loving sister to my dad, Ralph, a kind sister-in-law to my mother, Pat and a caring aunt to me and my brothers. My husband, Terry, myself and our children, Blaise and Braeden have wonderful memories of the time we spent with her in the summer of 1998. Every time the boys would jump into the swimming pool at her apartment they would shout out "Auntie Hjordis" with much joy! They loved her and she loved them. Auntie Hjordis was a strong female role model for me and a good listener. I appreciated any advice she would give. I loved my Auntie Hjordis very much and will miss her dearly. My deepest condolences to my cousins, Ralph (Leslie), Pat, and Larraine. Your mother was a gem and will be sorely missed. She really did make the world a brighter and better place. - Posted by: Linnea Abbott (niece) on: Jan 06, 2018
