Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Hi Esther: It was by chance that I read in the Montreal Gazette about the passing of your aunt Regina and saw that you were her niece and beside your name was Eli's name flagged as being the late Eli. In looking up Winnipeg's obituaries, I saw the details and the date of his passing. I am sorry to hear of that and as long ago as January 2018. We both know what it is like to lose a loved one, Deena's passing will be 7 years in November. Brian Chernoff - Posted by: Brian Chernoff (acquaintance) on: Sep 26, 2022

  • Esther, I don't know what to say. Our fleeting times in 1979 Regina. And your hospitality whenever I came down from Thompson to stay with you in Winnipeg.. You move, you lose touch. Eli was a great freind and fabulous musician. It's been so long you probably barely remember me. I will never forget my good freind from back then. • When Eli was band teacher at Gordon Bell High School in the mid-eighties, I developed a good rapport with him from the beginning. When Finjan was recording their album, "From Ship To Shore" at Wayne Finucan's, I lived nearby off Sherbrook Street & I remember with fondness, going with him & Finjan to the Winnipeg Folk Festival & being given the VIP treatment...my only regret about is that I never told him how much he influenced me & that he was, to me, more than my band teacher. He was my friend. I will miss him more than words can express. - Posted by: Brian Johnston (Former Band Teacher & Mentor) on: Dec 12, 2019

  • I am overwhelmed to hear the loss of someone so talented, funny, and a true entertainer and performer. Any opportunity to work with Eli, you can be sure it was packed with adventures that you will always fondly remember. Eli was enthusiastic about any gig, no matter how big or small, he made you feel like you had won the lotto or something. It was just that way about him that made Eli so special. I will miss your energy, your spirit and your music you played with so much passion. God give you a special place where you can continue to play your music and be forever happy. - Posted by: Silvia Aiello (Friend/fellow musician) on: Apr 10, 2018

  • As a next door neighbour I held many enjoyable discussions with Eli as we both came from Montreal and had a lot in common to talk about. We had these talks in my garden as he would be coming and going from and to his car.He played at our niece's wedding and contributed greatly to the occasion with his musical talent. We had just arrived to take up residence in Winnipeg and what a surprise it was to discover shortly after that we were living next door to him.I hope he is keeping everybody up there happy with his love for music.May he find eternal rest and happiness in the afterlife! I shall miss him when I'm out in the garden next spring. Our sympathy to his good wife and family! - Posted by: bernard and sonja de gannes (neighbour) on: Jan 14, 2018

  • Eli and his band played at both my daughters’ weddings, in 2004 and 2005. He had a wonderful sense of the room and the band really made the party on both occasions. He was also a true professional to work with. Our condolences to everyone in the family. - Posted by: Janet Gould (Client) on: Jan 11, 2018

  • Our saddened hearts are with you and your family today Esther. Hearing that Eli has passed away is shocking and heart breaking news. We have so many wonderful memories of Eli's humour and storytelling these past twenty years. He had such incredible talent and skill in music. Dedicated to his craft throughout his life as a young man at McGill University and for the rest of his life as a teacher and entertainer. He was one the first artists to play at our Lazy Dog cafĂ©. He was so popular with our guests who always asked when Eli would be coming back. Imagine our surprise when he played such a variety of instruments...sax, clarinet, flute and blues harp! He would have been the first artist to perform at our new place this spring. We will truly miss our good friend Eli. - Posted by: Mary Anne and Barry Shore (Friends) on: Jan 06, 2018
