MARIE LOUISE DAWYDUK (nee HOGUE) Peacefully at Riverview Health Centre in the early evening of January 3, 2018. Louise was born on August 7, 1920 as the seventh child of Thomas Hogue and Emma Girardin of La Salle, Manitoba. Mom won a battle with pneumonia at a very early age then grew up on the family farm and homestead. She remembered running away to hide with her younger brother Albert to avoid the sight of headless chickens while covering her ears to block out the sounds. Mom would also recall times when her dad was Sheriff of La Salle, criminals were often held for the night in the house, guarded in turns by some of her five older brothers. While Louise served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from August 1942 to April 1946, one of her most cherished memories of that time was being a pitcher for the baseball team and earning herself the nickname "Speed". After her "honourable release" she met and married Bill in 1949. Together they forged a life by raising their children in a family owned rooming house on Hargrave Street, on Morley Avenue and on Edison Avenue before retiring on Roselawn Bay. Dad was a stationary engineer with Ogilvie Flour Mills, but Louise was the glue which kept the household humming and her boys in line. For the school information forms she filled out each year she cheekily noted her occupation as a "domestic engineer". Louise was an excellent cook, learning how to make Ukrainian dishes to the satisfaction of Bill and his brother Steve, but a better baker of Christmas goodies. She was a constant at home during school lunchtimes and a devout Catholic who did her best to raise her boys as such. She spoiled her boys by ensuring that they all received what they wanted on birthdays and Christmas (working at Eaton's warehouse during the busy holiday season) with a few added touches specifically designed for each of our tastes. Mom was an accomplished five-pin bowler, often winning the roll-off for the Thanksgiving turkey (much to the delight of Dad). After Gary finished high school she began to enjoy cruise trips to the Caribbean, Hawaii and Alaska with close friends, Evelyn Marsh, Evelyn Andrews, and Judy Gacek. Mom also enjoyed time spent with her long-time friends Marty Burton, Mona Goodman, Doris Chimilar and Winsome Mitchell, while also being a mentor and sounding board to the daughters of many of these friends. All the while playing an important, loving and giving role to her sons and revelling in delight as daughters-in-law and grandchildren appeared on the scene. After a fall in 2012 Mom resided in Personal Care Homes, initially for a brief period at the Convalescent Home and since April 2013, Riverview Health Centre. The family wishes to extend a multitude of thanks to the floor director, the nurses, the health care aides and the service partners at Riverview for making her stay there enjoyable if not sometimes trying when she exhibited a bit of her feisty "frenchness". Mom was predeceased by her husband Bill in 2006, son Tom (2013) and his spouse Barb Houlden (2009), son Bob (2009), son John (2011) and his spouse Ingrid Olafsson (2005). Louise was also predeceased by her siblings and their spouses, Joe (Madge), Tom (Madeleine), Raymond (Jeanne), Aime (Louise), Irene (Maurice) Pariseau, John (Emma) and Albert (Margaret). Mom is survived by her eldest son Steve and her two youngest boys Richard (Lesly Bastiaanssen) and Gary (Eileen Street). Surviving grandchildren are Tom's son Jamie, John's son Nik and daughter Anna (Geoff Dumas and children Sloane and Briggs) as well as Gary and Eileen's two boys Ryan Street (Mel and daughters Haley, Teagin and Mykenzie) and Jarrod Street (Michelle and sons David, Ethan and Niall). Coming into the world as a later sibling meant that Louise had a close relationship with a number of nieces and nephews. No doubt though that after growing up on the farm with six boys while having six of her own, Mom had a particularly special place in her heart for her nieces and is fondly remembered by them as well as her nephews. A Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9 at Our Lady of Victory Church, 249 Arnold Avenue (at Osborne) with a luncheon to follow. Interment at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit www.chapellawn.ca Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 204-885-9715

  • I met Louise at Riverview as my dad was a resident on the same unit . He passed away last April . Your mom and I took a shine to each other . Every time she saw me walk in , she would call me over and grab my hand. We would talk and joke around . She had a wonderful fun personality and I enjoyed our brief visits . She was a very tough, kind , sweet and fun lady that lived her life to the fullest . God bless you Marie Louise and family 💞 - Posted by: Laurie (Friend from Riverview ) on: Jan 07, 2018

  • It is going to be so hard to say "Goodbye" to my beloved "Auntie Louise". She was so loved by everyone, & she loved everyone in return, Stevie, Richard & Lesly, & Gary & Eileen, You have my most heartful sympathies, as I know she will be missed by you the most. It was kinda hard to visit with her this last year, but she was still my Sweetie. She was always so sweet, & had so many "funny" things to say. I loved her so very much, as I can remember her from the time I was very young. It was so "AWSOME" when she would come to the house in her Uniform. Those memories I will never forget. We all have beautiful memories of her, & they will keep us in our Hearts forever. Lovingly remember & Loved forever, Her niece, Connie XO XO - Posted by: Connie Prynne (Niece) on: Jan 06, 2018

  • Aunty Louise and Uncle Bill were a big part of my childhood. Family friends for as long as I can remember, I loved visiting their house as a child. Their house was always the complete opposite of ours. Our house was always calm and quiet, while their house was always full of people, noisy (with six boys), and full of wonderful smells. Aunty Louise was always in the kitchen cooking up a wonderful dinner complete with dessert which amazed me, as my Mom was not very competent in the kitchen. My favourite memory is my first gown which Aunty Louise made me for a close friends wedding. I was just a young girl excited to be going to my first wedding, but Aunty Louise made me feel like a princess. The fittings, made me feel so grown up, and I will never forget my first long dress. It was pink, a gorgeous A-line with short sleeves, and sparkly silver ribbon under the bust. Everyone commented on my beautiful dress. Aunty Louise always amazed me; nothing ruffled her feathers. Mom and I would be in the kitchen with her, there would be crashing and banging coming from the TV room, and she would calmly walk over to the room open the door, yell to the occupants they had to knock it off, and come back to the kitchen as though nothing had happened! I was always totally amazed by that, and the silence that followed. I was convinced that Aunty Louise could handle anything, she was amazing, One of my Mom’s best friends, as an adult I often enjoyed meeting Mom and Aunty Louise at the Kildonan Place Mall food court for lunch; or taking Mom over to Aunty Louise’s for a visit. A wonderful lady who will always hold a special place in my heart! Love You Aunty Louise; I am comforted to know that you are with Uncle Bill. • I remember Aunty always had wintergreen lifesavers in her purse. You could only get one if you did a trick, aunty taught us how to curl our tongues in a circle. I was able to do it, Sean not so much. Love you soo much Aunty, in so many ways you were like a grandmother to us. You will be missed and I will remember all the fond times we had and shared with one another. To my cousins my thoughts and prayers are with you all of you. My love to all of you, remember the happy times and cherish the moments that touched your hearts. Xoxoxox - Posted by: Lisa Sieben nee Kerr-Taylor (Great niece ) on: Jan 06, 2018
