BRIAN LONG Peacefully on Friday, January 5, 2018, Brian passed away at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 79. Brian leaves to cherish his memory - daughters Caryl (Kirk) Long; Corrine (Al) Pringle and grandson Justin; son Darren Long; sister June (Phil) LeBrun; brother Bill (Marge) Long; as well as many nieces and nephews and lifelong friends. He was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife, Arleen (nee Bjarnason); parents Archie and Margaret Long; and brother Hugh Long. Brian was a loving husband, great father and a wonderful grandfather. His family and friends meant everything to him. His favourite times were spent camping at Spruce Sands, and also watching his grandson, Justin, play hockey. Many hours were also spent keeping in touch with friends and just relaxing with his loyal canine companion, Buddy. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating Brian's life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 13, at Thomson "In the Park", 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg. The family wishes to thank all the caregivers from Home Instead for their care and compassion through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, if you so desire, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

I started looking up my family on ancestry.com and contacted Brian about a year and a half ago. Brian was the son of my dad’s sister. We met for coffee and had a lovely visit - he looked just like a Malmgren. He told me he used to work for my dad on his boat many years ago. I was so sorry to read Brian’s obit a few days ago and wanted to give my condolences to all of Brian’s family - Posted by: Linda (Malmgren) Flood (Second cousin daughter of John Malmgren ) on: Jan 27, 2018

Brian was our neighbour at Spruce Sands. We Knew Arlene and Brian for many years. Our Sincere Condolences to the whole family. Brian will be Dearly missed. He always had a smile whenever we saw him. He would quietly stop by to have a chat. Or sometimes would yell across and say How are you? He would watch our boys run around the trailer and smile. He used to say Boy these kids have energy. When we moved to our cottage at Spruce Sands that we bought from his Dear friends he would pop over and visit us there. We so enjoyed his company. Brian would light up when Caryl and Kirk come to visit, and also when his friends came over for the long weekends at the lake. We so enjoyed seeing him with 'Buddy' he truly spoiled him. We miss you already Brian. You are now with the Love of your Life. Rest in Peace. Linda and Ron Hutter - Posted by: Linda and Ron Hutter (Neighbours at the lake) on: Jan 13, 2018

My condolences to Caryl, Corrine and Darren on the loss of their dad. I met cousin Brian for the first time when I was flower girl at his wedding to cousin Arleen. Brian was always a positive person and the room lit up when he entered with that big smile. I fondly remember when he and Arleen would come to Vancouver and stay with my mom and dad and later just with mom. We would do a lot of sightseeing and just hang out and visit and eat. Brian loved his family dearly and it showed in the way he lived his life. Dear Brian, the world is just a bit smaller without you in it. Rest In Peace - Posted by: Diane Rees (Cousin) on: Jan 12, 2018

Caryl, Corrine and Darren..... Please accept our sincere condolences on the loss of your father. We will always remember his friendly smile, his friendship and the sincere and genuine nature that he continuously displayed. We really enjoyed getting together with him when had an opportunity to visit Caryl and Kirk, having a few BBQs together ( he was a grill master ) and of course some great conversations covering a variety of topics. It was a privilege to have known Brian and you are very blessed to have had such a father. Love Lasby & Carole Lowes Port Hope, Ontario - Posted by: Lasby & Carole Lowes (Friend) on: Jan 12, 2018

I want to offfer my sympathy and condolence on Brian’s passing to his family, Caryl, Corrine, Darren and Justin. Brian was married to my first cousin, Arleen, who was the daughter of my mom Bea’s older sister, the always remembered “Auntie Stina”. When Brian came into the family everyone loved him from the start for his good nature and positive outlook on life and all-round niceness as a person. I remember his and Arleen’s visits to Vancouver where they would stay with mom and dad and just “hang out” and sight see and talk and of course cook and eat. I also remember visits to Bibeau Bay and Brian’s and Arleen’s always great hospitality. Many happy memories over the course of the many years of our relationship. Brian was a kind man who loved his family and whose family loved him. He will be missed. Rest In Peace Brian. - Posted by: Denis de Keruzec (Cousin by marriage) on: Jan 12, 2018

I always enjoyed visting my uncle Brian, aunt Arleen, Caryl, Corrine and Darren as I was growing up. We had a lot of fun and Brian was always so welcoming with a great big smile. He helped me out on numerous automotive problems on the wrecks I tended to buy. I am going to miss him. - Posted by: Mitch Long (Nephew) on: Jan 12, 2018

Brian was married to my first cousin Arleen. We left Winnipeg in the 70's and so did not have the opportunity to keep up our family relationship for many years. However after Arleen and Brian travelled to Calgary one year, they came up to see us in Edmonton and ever since then, we kept in close contact, enjoying visits from them in Edmonton a couple of times and then when we visited Winnipeg, their home was always welcome to us. We had many visits with Brian after Arleen passed away, so many good times, so many laughs and good meals. He was an awesome cook, a very funny loving person. We will always think of him with fond memories and will miss him greatly. Our love to Caryl, Corrine, Darren and Justin. - Posted by: Linda and Al Cornell (Cousin) on: Jan 11, 2018

I met Brian (Bugs we called him then) as I entered Junior High. He was a year ahead of me in school and a star athlete. I was a nerd who couldn't throw a ball to save my life (still can't despite his trying to teach me!) Brian took me under his wing and made sure I was always ok. If it weren't for him, I most probably would have been bullied, but I never was. He was generally the captain of a team whether it was baseball, football, dodgeball or hockey, and he always made sure I wasn't chosen last even though I would undoubtedly handicap the team. He remained my best friend throughout school and beyond. He was always there to fix my car problems or to lend a hand whenever it might be needed. Still a year ahead of me, but gone too soon, he is sorely missed. - Posted by: Doug Kilgour () on: Jan 10, 2018

Missed seeing Brian this last summer. We first met Brian and Arleen when they were in C Bay at Spruce Sands and always remember his rosy cheeks and smile and the curly hair atop his head. Loved seeing him on our golf cart rides through B Bay and will miss his cheery smile. He will be missed. - Posted by: Tom & Jo-Anne Roberts (Lake friends) on: Jan 10, 2018

I remember meeting your dad for the first time back in high school. He reminded me of a beardless santa. Bright shiny eyes, red cheeks and the biggest smile ever! He was always so positive and happy - kindest man ever. He always made me feel completely at home & welcomed every time I came to visit. He also reminded me so much of my own father. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. My thoughts and deepest love are with you all xoxoxo. - Posted by: Monique Roukema (Friend of the family) on: Jan 09, 2018
