I was saddened to hear of Cheryl's recent passing. We spoke last summer by phone after having lost touch many years ago, when I called to see if she might be able to attend our Nursing Class Reunion in September, 2017. I was sorry to hear she hadn't been well, and we shared a few laughs remembering our favourite antics while living in the nurses' residence during our training days. Our best laugh was remembering the night before a difficult exam, when neither of us could settle our nerves down long enough to study. It was Hallowe'en, and we decided if we went out for some fun for a while, then perhaps we could burn off our anxiety and study better afterwards. What would we do for costumes? It turned out I had the right tee-shirt and cap to be a baseball player, and Cheryl had garb and a cap to be my manager. With pillow cases in-hand, off we ran to knock on the doors of neighbouring houses to beg for our share of Hallowe'en candy. It didn't take long to get quite a haul in our sacks. Then we had to decide what to do with it all (anything to avoid the books)! Soon after, we found ourselves on the 5th floor of the Grace Hospital's then-called Pediatrics and Young Adults ward, asking permission from the Nurse-in-Charge to hand out goodies to the patients. She said 'yes' and off we went again. Cheryl and I had a wonderful, fun and happy time wearing off our pent-up energy and feeling like we did a good thing. To the best of my recall we settled down to our studying afterwards and passed the exam the next day. I will always remember this happy time with Cheryl, along with her pleasant smile and laugh that she always shared readily with others. I am sorry she is gone and am grateful to have known her. Cheryl made our training days at the Grace a happier place to be. - Posted by: Pauline James Curtis (Former Classmate from Grace General Hospital School of Nursing) on: Feb 10, 2018
