ANGELINA ALLEGRO (nee ROMEO) June 12, 1931 Amato, Calabria, Italy January 6, 2018 Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada It is with utmost love and respect for our dear mother and nonna that we announce the passing of Angelina Allegro, peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on January 6, 2018 at the Grace Hospital. Angelina is survived by her four children: Sina Allegro-Sacco (Cesare); Gino Allegro (Holly); Charlie Allegro (Donna); and Ross Allegro (Cheryl), as well as her eight granddaughters: Jennifer (Hart) and Ashleigh (Dimitri) Sacco; Kaila and Samantha Allegro; Hailey and Abigail Allegro; and Bronte and Gillian Allegro. She is also survived by: Giuseppe Allegro, her husband of 47 years; sisters-in-law Amelia and Rosetta Romeo; dear friend Vittoria Colosimo, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents: Catarina (nee Conca) and Pasquale Romeo; brothers: Antonio, Peppino and Angelo Romeo; and close family friend Carmela Sacco. Angelina worked as a seamstress in Amato, Italy, prior to immigrating to Canada in 1957. She travelled on her own across the Atlantic for over six weeks by ship when she arrived in Halifax to meet her husband in person for the first time, together they continued to Winnipeg by train where she would live for the next 60 plus years. In Canada she was a homemaker dedicated to raising her four children, cooking delicious Italian meals, caring for her granddaughters, and was known as "nonna" to many beyond her family. In 2003, Angelina moved to Villa Nova on her own, to start a new chapter in life. She described it as "paradiso" making countless friends, enjoying the group activities, and her newfound independence. Her devotion to the Roman Catholic religion was demonstrated by praying the rosary every evening with fellow Villa Nova Residents, and attending mass at Holy Rosary Church. Her warm, maternal nature provided constant comfort to her children, which fostered the unique and close relationships she had with all of them. She saw the positive in every situation, was an excellent sounding board and always offered reassurance that things will be okay. She had a special relationship with her granddaughters and was never remiss to greet them with wide-open arms, her contagious million-dollar smile, always referring to them as "bella" and "pupa." Angelina cared deeply about her family and friends; her kind and loving disposition was infectious and felt by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed but her teachings and memories will forever remain a legacy. A Funeral Mass celebrating Angelina's life will be held on Thursday, January 11, at 11:00 a.m., at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue. The viewing will take place one hour prior. Entombment to follow service at Waverly Memorial Gardens, 1501 Waverly Street. Pallbearers will be Angelina's eight granddaughters. The family would like to thank Misericordia Interim Care, Misericordia Place, and the 3rd floor of the Grace Hospital, for their care and support. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The Alzheimer and Dementia Society of Manitoba. Riposa in Pace Mama.
