HELGA MARIA DEUTINGER MATHERS November 17, 1940 - January 7, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Helga, after a long and difficult battle with cancer and pneumonia. Helga will be lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend of 47 years, James Edward ("Ted") Mathers and their daughter Sandra Dawn ("Sandy") as well as her eldest child Andrea Patterson and Andrea's son Nathan Patterson. Helga is survived by a multitude of cousins in Germany, as well as nieces and nephews across Canada. Helga was an only child and predeceased by her father, mother and mother-in-law and by her four boys, James Edward and Wayne Allan in 1974, Edward Allan in 1979 and Christian Karl Sommer in 2014. Helga was a traveller of the world - born and raised in Bavaria from where she moved to Britain and then to South Africa, before immigrating to Canada and landing in Winnipeg on a sunny day in May 1967. Helga was an incredibly strong, intelligent and determined woman and well-known for her couturier and culinary skills. While raising a family and a herd of llamas, Helga continued her exploration of the world through books and recipes and would never be too far from a new mystery novel and a slice of her famous cheesecake. Cremation has taken place and at Helga's request, there will be no service. Helga will be resting peacefully with her children and mother at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg. The family extends their thanks and appreciation to the staff of Seven Oaks Hospital for the care and compassion provided to Helga in her last days.
