Date of Passing: Jan 06, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFREDERICK ERNEST (FRED) STOCK It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, Frederick Ernest (Fred) Stock at The Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, January 6, 2018 - four days before his 90th birthday. Fred was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to British parents, Elsie and Herbert Stock. The family returned to Hull, England in 1940. He was a fun-loving teenager and joked that "you should never ask a question to which you might invite the answer "no"". He loved ballroom dancing and cycling and joined a cycling club where he met Audrey whom he married in September, 1952. He loved working on cars and became an apprentice mechanic while attending night school for many years to earn his qualifications in mechanical and electrical engineering. In 1967, he accepted a position with Manitoba Bridge & Engineering Co. and moved his family to Winnipeg. Fred loved to travel and covered Canada with his family from coast-to-coast within the first few years of his arrival, taking many photographs then developing them himself in the basement darkroom he had built. Always physically active, he went for regular runs with the family dog and became a member of the Manitoba Marlins Swim Club, entering many competitions and winning many medals. Known for his motto "If you're going to do a job, do it properly!," he had a huge, fruitful vegetable garden and a magnificent lawn. In 1975, he joined Manitoba Hydro, from which he retired in 1996. He took up flying as a hobby and became so passionate that he went on to become president of The Winnipeg Flying Club, later earning his commercial pilot's license. He was a member of the Freemasons. Predeceased by wife Audrey in 2010, Fred is survived by his children, Shirley (Gaywood), Gordon (Josie) and Carole; grandchildren, Jenn (Garrett), Rachel (Bill), Andrew and Adrian and great-grandchildren, Brady, Dylan, Kasey and Jorgia. Heartfelt thanks to the staff of The Waverley who took such good care of Fred during his two years there. A private family service has taken place. Rest well, we will miss and remember you always. Fred was a long time associate and friend at Manitoba Hydro. In September 1978, Fred and I became Charter Members of the Manitoba Hydro Toastmasters Club 940. FRed went on to become a leader in the club and District 64, achieving many honours while inspiring and helping many new members to become better communicators. Fred entertained us with his wit and skill in presenting stories depicting his various interests. I will miss his warm smile, jolly laugh and his enthusiasm for life. My sincere sympathy to Fred's family. Barbara Main - Posted by: Barbara Main (Friend, Past District 64 Governor, Toastmasters International) on: Jan 20, 2018

Fred will be greatly missed by all his co-workers and his many friends at the Hydro-X Group. Fred was a brilliant engineer, and a man of many interests, as well as always a gentleman. - Posted by: Hydro X Group (Co-workers) on: Jan 17, 2018

Fred was a fixture at Toastmasters International Conventions. I met him first there, and later invited him to be an Area Governor for our team. He was a lovely man who seemed to love life and giving his all. He will be missed. - Posted by: Catriona Younger (Fellow Toastmaster) on: Jan 15, 2018

Fred is one of my heroes. He started the Cityslickers Toastmasters club and was a significant part of building my speaking skills and self-confidence. He was a blessing to so many people. I never found a topic on which Fred could not converse. Even now, when we have not seen each other for many years, I think of him often. He led by example and showed many a toastmaster not only how to communicate well but how to communicate ethically. I will miss him. - Posted by: Don Schau (friend/acquaintance) on: Jan 14, 2018

As I often do, I was thinking of Fred this morning while swimming. Fred was an inspiration to me and many others, not so much because of his age but because of his indefatigable good cheer. "That was fun", he would proclaim after a rigorous practice. I was equally impressed by his many interests and talents and enjoyed having breakfast with him because I learned so much. My sympathies to his family; he will be missed by the club and by me. - Posted by: Wayne Selby (Friend) on: Jan 13, 2018
