ROBERT OLSON June 8, 1958 - January 6, 2018 Peacefully at the Gimli Community Health Centre, Rob Olson, aged 59 years, passed away after a brief battle with cancer. Rob is survived by daughter Thea; siblings David (Wendy), Karen and Kris; sister-in-law Dilly; nephews and nieces Kai, Kena, Fraser, and Liam; aunts Gladys and Grace; many cousins and numerous friends. He was predeceased by his parents Paul and Margaret, and brother Kenny. Rob was a proud commercial fisherman born and raised in Gimli. His deep attachment to fishing and to life in general was infectious. He loved the serenity and solitude of the lake, the freedom in his vocation, being his own boss. His love of fishing was matched only by his love of music. He called himself the fishing musician and composed and recorded songs such as "I Wish I Were a Fisherman Down in Gimli". He performed in rock bands The Bite and The Rockadiles with long time friend Jim Ingram and cousin Grant McLachlan, both loved like brothers. Entrepreneurial in spirit, he created, owned and operated Brennivin's Pizza Hus in Gimli for several years. A child at heart, he loved rockets, Star Wars and Batman. During his brief illness he started building a new rocket while watching Star Wars movies. Rob had a special charm that everyone loved. He was the life of the party and kept us all laughing. He was loved by all who met him and will be greatly missed by family and friends. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Rob's wishes there will be no formal service. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Condolences may be left at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements.

  • I was so sorry to hear about Robert's passing. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say. - Posted by: Ruth Arnason (Family friend) on: Jan 14, 2018

  • Rob left this world a better place for having been here with us. From the time that he was a little boy, Rob had an amazing smile and a great sense of humour. Rob, my brother Grant, and their friend Jim were like three musketeers and their deep friendship and musical talent naturally moved toward forming a band, and then another one. Rob was like a brother to me. He was loved by so many and will always be remembered. - Rhonda Gorham, cousin - Posted by: Rhonda Gorham (Cousin) on: Jan 13, 2018

  • Rob; You will be missed, long time friend childhood memories will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Tom Thordarson/Sharon Lisowski (Friends) on: Jan 13, 2018
