MARGARETE (GRETCHEN) WENZEL April 30, 1917 - January 6, 2018 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Mutti, Gretchen Wenzel, on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Misericordia Place, at the age of 100. She was predeceased by her husband, Max, in 2010. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters Barbara Christophe (Bernie) and Angie Unger (John), grandchildren, Gerald Becker (Lisa), Steven Becker (Eden), Danielle Unger (Sam) and Carly Alary (Marc), great-grandchildren, Christina, Adrian, Evan, Noah, Avery, Marielle, Teagan and Chloé, and great-great-grandchild Isabella. Gretchen was born in Ermsleben, Germany on April 30, 1917, and was the youngest of six children. She started her working career in Ballenstedt, Germany and eventually managed a specialty food and wine store. It was during this time that she met our dad, Max, the love of her life. They got married in 1940 during the war, and in 1946 moved to Hamburg, Germany. In 1956, with their two daughters, Barbara and Angie, they immigrated to Canada to start a whole new life. Gretchen was a hard worker who took great pride in making her home warm and inviting. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter, great cook and wonderful baker. Most of all she enjoyed entertaining, which always included music and dancing. I'm sure her family and friends will all remember the lively parties that she and our dad hosted. She loved fishing, bowling, playing cards and Yahtzee. Our parents also spent many happy summers at Red Rock Lake, and after retirement, their winters in Florida which they both said were the best years of their lives. Mutti was a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was extremely proud of her whole family. We will all miss her dearly. Thank you to the caregivers at Misericordia Health Centre and Misericordia Place for taking such good care of our mom during the last two years. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
