Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. DAVID ROSS OAKLEY June 23, 1930 - January 14, 2018 The family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grand father at the Betel Care Home in Gimli after a valiant fight with Alzheimers Disease. Born in Toronto, predeceased by sisters Gloria Hosegood and Elaine Meek and son-in-law Brian Kahler. Survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Elene Helga (nee Eylands), children David Robert Oakley (Lesley) and Louise Kahler; grandchildren David Jordan Oakley(Mandy), Erin Brady (Matt), Meaghan Gale (Darren), and Jennifer Kahler; great grandchildren Madison, Brooklyn and Brandon Gale, Emma and Reid Brady, numerous nieces and nephews. A graduate of the University of Waterloo School of Optometry in 1954, he chose Gimli to set up his optometric practice, where he pursued his passion for hunting ducks, geese, moose, elk, and deer, and the fishing was good. His early practice included the communities of Teulon, Eriksdale, Arborg and Gimli. In 2009 he was honored by the Manitoba Optometric Association with a lifetime membership, for over 50 years of service to his patients in the Interlake. His community service included the school board, the Parks and Recreation board, and helping the Gimli Kinsmen club install the first artificial ice rink in Gimli, for which he was given a Lifetime Award. A sports enthusiast, he loved hockey and coached and managed minor hockey teams for many years, and attended and followed The Winnipeg Jets as long as he could. An avid gardener, family and friends joked that he could feed the entire town with the bounty of his huge garden, boasting a variety of squash, carrots, broccoli and salad vegetables. Pilot, Dog trainer, wine maker, music lover, wood worker, Master Angler and Golfer; he had many interests but his first commitment was to his patients and to the practice of Optometry. Honourary pallbearers: Marcel Zelisko, Ken Sylvester, Dr. Gregory Hosegood and David Jordan Oakley and Garry MacGregor. Cremation has taken place. Service will be held at Gimli Lutheran Church on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m., Mona Josephson and Rev. Courtenay Reedman-Parker officiating. Private interment to follow. Neil Bardal Inc, in care of arrangements. The Oakley family would like to thank all the staff, nurses, caregivers and volunteers at Betel Home, Gimli for the tender kindness and love shown to the vulnerable souls in their care. Flowers are graciously declined, but if friends so desire a donation may be made to the Betel Care Home, Gimli Lutheran Church, or their favourite charity.
