THOMAS KAYE MATTHEWS 1932 - 2018 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Tom at the Concordia Hospital on January 23, 2018 at the age of 85 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 61 years Anita; and their children: Diane (Vince) Ryz and their children, Michael, Jason (Amanda), Kristin, Andrew, Matthew and Ashley; Linda (Dennis) Mitchell and their children, Ryan (Jessica), Erin and Kevin (Hayley); Jim and his children, Thomas and Michelle; Robert (Karla) and their children, Braden and Ty; two great-grandchildren, Ben and Zoe Ryz; sister-in-law Doreen (Don) McNeill; brothers-in-law, Les (Thelma) Matheson and Lynn (Gloria) Matheson. Tom is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his parents, James Alexander (Matty) and Rossie Matthews; two half-sisters, Evelyn and Marjorie; half-brother Norman; brother Don (Jenny and Lois) Matthews; sisters, Ruth (Ed) Juzcek and Janet (Jack) Hudson. Tom was born in 1932 to parents, Matty and Rossie Matthews. He lived in the family home his father built in Fort Gary for 67 years. He attended General Steele, General Byng, S.J.R. and Gordon Bell schools. Tom and Anita were married in 1957 and had their four children within six years. Tom was a humble man, a real gentleman and an astute businessman who was highly regarded in the business community. He worked closely with his son Jim and valued his support and wisdom. They were best friends. Tom served on many boards over the years and was always interested in others opinions and ideas. Tom was a driving force in the Tim-Ber-Mart organization and a member of WRLA and Winnipeg Executive Association. Tom loved his summers at Clearwater Bay since 1966, spending time with his family, whom he adored, teaching them how to swim, water ski, sail, platform tennis and having saunas and hot tubs. The family fishing trips with shore lunches were the highlight of the weekend as were bon fires out on the rock. Tom and Anita wintered in Titusville, Florida for 30 years, forming long lasting friendships playing golf. They spent five years in Palm Desert, California before realizing their traveling days were over. Tom and Anita were fortunate to have traveled extensively worldwide seeing many interesting countries. Tom played competitive badminton at the Wildewood Club in his younger days and switched to squash at the Winnipeg Squash and Racquet Club, where he was a life member. He made many close friends and was always ready for their golf and fishing trips with the boys. He was also a member of the St. Charles Country Club. Tom was an avid hunter, goose, duck and upland game of all sorts from Alberta to Nebraska. He was in his eighties when he hunted partridge with Ross, Jack and Les in Saskatchewan. Special thanks to the Paramedics, Dr. Carmen Hrymak and nurse Christian in I.C.U. at the Concordia Hospital for your compassion. Thank you to all the friends who have sent beautiful floral arrangements, cards, phone calls and emails. They have brought great comfort. Tom has been cremated and there will be no funeral service. The family will have a Celebration of Life held on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Fort Whyte Centre, 1961 McCreary Road.
