Condolences & Memories (15 entries)

  • Kevin and I first met Ernie when he met the love of his life later on in his life. His wonderful hunting companion “Milt Steegal”. Ernie loved that dog and the two of them lived to hunt. Ernie would return from the hunt excited and proud to share the stories of the miraculous retrieves Milt performed. Ernie was a caring sweetheart. We will miss him. Rest peacefully friend. Norma, Gerta and family we are so sorry for your loss. Hugs Gail & Kevin. - Posted by: Gail Komadoski & Kevin Howarth (Friend) on: Apr 18, 2018

  • It was with deep sorrow that I learned of Ernst's passing. I first came to know Ernst when he agreed to sit on the Board of the Central Speech & Hearing Clinic. That was 26 years ago , in 1992, when he rented the Paddlewheel Princess so that we could entertain out-of-town guests, speakers and participants attending an International Auditory-Verbal conference held at the U of M. Ernst was a kind and generous man. He took his commitment to hearing impaired children very seriously. He was always willing to help out whenever we called upon him. He attended every Culinary Classic For Kids, our gala fundraiser, and if unable to do so always purchased a table for parents of the Clinic. At Board meetings he was invaluable for his expertise in financial matters. As ED of the Clinic, Ernst was one of the first Board members I would call upon for sage advice. I will miss his clear thinking and wisdom. On behalf of the Board of Directors, the Staff and the families of the Clinic. Rest In Peace, dear friend. We offer our most sincere condolences to Ernst's family, Norma, Gerda and Paul. • I have known Ernst Schell as a most generous and caring philanthropist, most notably in his support of the Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, but he supported many charitable organizations. He had such a generous heart for sick children that stemmed from his own family's experiences with Children's Hospital. He deeply loved his wife and children, and I know this loss will be very hard for them. My sympathies and prayers to Norma, Gerda and Paul. - Posted by: Beth Proven (Friend) on: Feb 16, 2018

  • Very sorry to hear of your loss Gerta. My thoughts are with you, and your mom and brother. Take care and we'll see you in the store soon. - Posted by: Erin Baragar (La Boutique) on: Feb 15, 2018

  • I was saddened to learn of Ernie’s passing. For many years we were members in the Rotary Club of Winnipeg and were team members in the 2008 Census in Igloolik, Nunavut. Ernie’s sometimes gruff demeanor hid a heart of gold and a soft spot for the underdog. He always called me brother. In the last year we participated in a group of friends who met periodically for lunch. I will miss Ernie’s comments on markets, investments and on life in general. Leslie Weir and I send our condolences to Norma, Gerda and other members of his family. Rest in peace brother! - Posted by: Terry E. Cheater (friend) on: Feb 15, 2018

  • I MET ERNIE IN 1956 AT DOMINION SECURITIES IN THE OLD WS&L BUILDING. HE INTRODUCED ME TO THE INVESTMENT BUSINESS. MY VERY FIRST PURCHASE WAS SEAGRAMS AND I EVEN MADE SOME MONEY. I ALWAYS CONSIDERED HIM AS ONE OF VERY FEW IN HIS BUSINESS WHO WAS ALWAYS MORE CONCERNED FOR HIS CLIENTS THAN FOR HIMSELF. WE ENJOYED A WONDERFUL FRIENDSHIP FOR THE NEXT 62 YEARS. PERSONAL REGARDS TO NORMA, GERDA AND PAUL - Posted by: MARSDEN FENWICK (FRIEND ) on: Feb 15, 2018

  • So sorry to hear belatedly of Ernst’s passing. We have been away this winter and just heard the sad news. Ernst was a long time supporter and volunteer with Ducks Unlimited Canada. He and Norma were regular attendees at the Ministers Dinner and valued sponsors of DUC’s youth education programs. He was a cheerful and generous person and always very encouraging and supportive. He will be terribly missed. Sincere condolences to Norma and the family. - Posted by: Rick Wishart (Friend) on: Feb 14, 2018

  • My thoughts and prayers are with you in this most difficult time. It was a great privilege to have worked with Mr Schell and will always remember his generosity to all of us at the office. Please accept my deepest sympathy for his loss. - Posted by: Lorrie and Hank Dodd (Co-worker) on: Feb 13, 2018

  • Sending this from Arizona where word has reached me of Ernie's passing. Having grown up in Winnipeg, I was away from the city for most of the 60s, returning in 1971 with Wood Gundy. One of the very first to walk through my door, hand extended, was Ernie of the investment firm, Dominion Securities. Technically we were supposed to be fierce competitors but that was of no matter to Ernie, nor to me. We became the best of friends and even though I left Winnipeg for good in 1973, we maintained a wonderful friendship over all these years. They broke the mold.......! - Posted by: David Currie (Friend) on: Feb 13, 2018

  • So very sorry to hear of Ernie's passing. We actually just heard about it so we missed the service. Our thoughts and prayers are with you Gerda. Your dad was such a nice man. We feel sad that he is gone and sad for Norma. He lived a full life and was a blessing to many people. - Posted by: Leslie and Colleen Gunn (Friend) on: Feb 13, 2018

  • I first met Ernie when we were both members of the United Way administration committee. Harsh, abrupt, direct. Not afraid to speak his mind even if it was different from everyone else. It was not until I got to know him through Rotary that I began to appreciate his strengths of intelligence, generosity and caring. He supported Rotary in many ways as I know he did with several other charities. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Don Ross (Fellow Rotarian for 25 years) on: Feb 12, 2018

  • Rest in Piece Ernie. My sincere condolences to the family and friends. - Posted by: Youssef Mouzahem (Rotary Club Member) on: Feb 12, 2018

  • It is with deep sorrow that I hear this news. Some of my most cherished memories are of spending time with Uncle Ernie, Auntie Norma, Gerda and Paul at Minaki. Uncle Ernie had great integrity and a heart of gold. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this very difficult time. • Auntie Norma, Gerda and Paul I am so sorry for your loss. I will forever remember, lovingly, his bone crushing handshake, thunderous laugh and bigger than life heart and personality. All who knew him were very fortunate indeed. - Posted by: Nancy Wright Kriebel (Second cousin) on: Feb 10, 2018
