BARRY KULY
Born: Feb 28, 1946
Date of Passing: Feb 13, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBARRY KULY February 28, 1946 February 13, 2018 Barry Kuly was an unforgettable person. He would sing you a greeting to welcome you to a room, with a big old grin and arms open wide for a hug. He would tell you a terrible joke, play a practical joke, bake you a braided bread and then paint you a beautiful banner. He would do anything to make you feel at ease (even if trying to make you feel at ease put you ill at ease!), no matter where you were. His love, his faith in God, his inquisitive mind and his passion for teaching made him unforgettable, which is why it was so hard to watch him slowly forget as Alzheimers set in over the last decade and eventually claimed Barry's life on February 13, 2018. Although the disease that took Barry's life was cruel, his dignity and vitality were safeguarded by the staff in the geriatric unit of the Selkirk Mental Health Centre. They have our deepest respect and admiration. Barry was born on February 28, 1946 and he died 71 years later in Selkirk, the community where he spent his life and career as a teacher. Family and community were so important to Barry. The ongoing love and support of Barry's family, his fellow Bible students, and colleagues from his hometown were a testament to how much he was loved. Barry was predeceased by his father Benjamin "Brownie" Kuly and mother Elizabeth Kuly. Barry has two younger brothers: Rod (Barbara) and David. In 1971 Barry married Lucie Beasse, the love of his life and partner to the very end. Together they raised Marc (Tamara) and Michelle (Andy and Jeffrey). Some of their happiest family time was spent on the farm in Lucie's hometown of Ste. Rose Du Lac where Barry was embraced as one of the family. He celebrated the birth of each of his grandchildren: Ruth, Jack and (little) Lucie and was the larger than life Uncle Barry to his nieces and nephews. Barry saw what was possible in life, not the obstacles. He told stories and he made them. These stories sustained us in love and laughter during our long goodbye. Please join us in hearing and sharing some of Barry's stories, his faith, and some good Ukrainian food on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, Manitoba. Stories about Barry keep his memory alive. We welcome yours be they funny, sad, happy or inspiring at: barrykulystories@gmail.com. His leadership, and team player qualities were exceptional. He Loved his family, Lucie, Marc, Michelle, and grandchildren . Barry was one of my dearest classmates for many years at St. Andrews School, starting in grade one with Mrs. Chick right to grade nine with Mr. Kiedyk. In elementary, Barry always made school life so much fun, and, he was often punished for many things he did not do, but, never turned us girls in! As adults, we became colleges in the LSSD and many more wonderful memories were formed. Every time I think of Barry I get that warm friendly feeling of having had such a remarkable man affect my life. My most sincere condolences to Lucie and her family and I share in your loss! - Posted by: Betty Ducheck (School Friend and Neighbour) on: Feb 19, 2018

Marc -- my deepest sympathies to you and your family. I have fond memories of your Dad from our junior high days -- he put up with quite a bit from us and yet that cheery smile never left him... at the chess matches, the school plays, and whatever other fun you, Franklin and the rest of the gang could stir up... Sincere condolences for your loss, and hugs from out West - Posted by: Shannon Charney ((old school friend of Marc's..)) on: Feb 18, 2018

Our condolences to you, Marc and Michelle. We share your loss in ways we cannot say. Barry was such an important part of our family's life, too. He brought sunshine with him to every room with his humour and goodwill. ( and especially his chicken jokes). , Like a jocular Uncle, Barry had a joke for every occasion. Professionally, he was a leader for the most positive changes in education in the Selkirk area. He modelled the changes that he wanted to see and spent years convincing administrators to act like humans. He taught teachers and parents that integrating the disabled into classrooms was better than segregating and that the way to improve learning was to humanize the process and focus on the child not the system. He brought high quality education to our schools. Our students were the winners! He may be gone, but he is remembered fondly by all who knew him! - Posted by: Rob and Laurel Sarginson (Friends) on: Feb 18, 2018

He was a great guy and friend to all. I haven't seen him since I left Selkirk in the "70's but thought of him often. He was one of those rare people you never forget. I will just say later Pal. - Posted by: Jim Gawne (Friend since grade school at St. Andrews) on: Feb 17, 2018

Back in the 90s, the kids at William S. Patterson School eagerly anticipated the Grade 5 privilege of attending Albert Beach winter camp. When my first child, Ari, reached that magical age, he couldn’t wait to board the school bus for this great adventure. But tragedy struck the day before his departure. He tore up soft tissue in his knee while sliding on the school’s snow hill and could not walk without crutches or a supportive friend. We were sure that camp would be cancelled for him. But Mr. Kuly, principal extraordinaire, insisted that Ari would participate in any activities that he could manage. Ari couldn’t snowshoe, but Mr. Kuly dragged him around the camp on a flying saucer with a rope attached to it, out to quinzee building, fire making and hot chocolate drinking. A little boy’s hero. This is my favourite Barry Kuly story. - Posted by: Conni Cartlidge (Friend) on: Feb 17, 2018

Dear Lucie and Family, My sincerest condolences to you. I didn’t know Barry very long but he began coming bowling on The Seniors league in Selkirk on Tuesdays with his neighbor Bob. Barry was already suffering with Alzheimers at that time but that didn’t stop him from becoming a valued participant! He always shared a joke, stories about his beloved Children and Grandchildren and he loved to tell anyone who was listening how very lucky he was to be married to “his Lucie”. It was my privilege to know Barry Kuly. - Posted by: Linda Clark (Friend) on: Feb 17, 2018

Deepest sympathies to you Lucie. I had the deepest respect for Barry as a knowledgeable and caring school administrator. When he said to me -"I think you've become a very good elementary principal"- I felt a deep sense of accomplishment because Barry was one of the people that I watched and listened to at meeting and events. He was so kind and generous of spirit. - Posted by: Gayle Halliwell (Colleague) on: Feb 17, 2018

I had the privilege of meeting Barry when I worked in more than one of his schools in the Selkirk area. Our interactions often involved laughter, especially the time when a parent stopped by the school to report to him that "a man with long legs" was playing soccer with the kids on the school grounds. After moving to Alberta in 2012, I have often thought of Lucie and Barry, and I will continue to do so, especially now. I wish you peace and strength, Lucie, and warm memories of the many happy times! - Posted by: Bill Stevens (Colleague and friend) on: Feb 16, 2018

Lucie, our most sincere sympathy on Barry’s passing. Bill has many fond memories of Barry at St. Andrews School. He remembers how smart Barry was and how Bill and the other boys were more interested in fooling around than learning. Whenever Barry and Bill would see each other these times brought many laughs. We are away on holidays but wanted to express our sympathy. Barry was so full of life, always joking , always making everyone smile. These are the memories we will remember him by. - Posted by: Bill & Linda Skromeda (School friend from St. Andrews) on: Feb 15, 2018
