RITA OLAND With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our mother, Rita May (Hogg) Oland on Sunday, February 18, 2018. Rita was born on August 10, 1925 in Winnipeg. She attended Isaac Brock School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, graduating in 1942. She worked for the R.C.A.F. in Winnipeg from 1942 to 1945, then for Great West Life from 1945 to 1946. On September 6, 1946 Rita married Erick Oland. They were married for almost 67 years, and lived much of that time on Rowand Avenue in Silver Heights. Rita was an active member of Silver Heights United Church for many years, but the Grace Hospital Auxiliary was her main focus. She was an active member of the auxiliary for over 37 years, during which time her special interest was always the Gift Shop. Rita also served on the Grace Hospital Board of Management from 1995 to 1996. She loved her years at "The Hospital", and always spoke of her many wonderful memories of times she had at the Grace. Rita and Erick enjoyed many winter vacations in Florida, and over 45 years at their cottage at West Hawk Lake. During those years the cottage became a gathering place for all the family. We all have many wonderful memories of celebrating Mum's birthday at the lake. Who else but Mum would go tubing on her 75th birthday? Rita loved her family dearly. She will be sadly missed and remembered by her four children: Janice (Jim McIlroy), Lynda (Barry Brown), Judy (Rick Anderes) and Erick, also her seven grandchildren: Wendy (Phil Preteau), Jim Fisher (Kristin Dahl), Kevin Brown (Christy Sokol-Brown), Alyson (Kurt Hildebrand), Jocelyne Anderes, Russel Anderes (Lucy Yan) and Luc Oland, as well as her 13 great-grandchildren, Kristen and Cody Claydon, Owen Preteau, Matthew Fisher, Lauren McIlroy, Madison, Hayden and Ashtyn Brown, Calvin and Penelope Hildebrand, Jonah Sawatsky, and her namesakes, Braelynn Eileen Rita Anderes and Amy Rita Oland. She will also be greatly missed by her sisters Irene Stobart and Shirley Boutilier, and brother-in-law Lionel Boutilier, as well as her many nieces and nephews. Rita, Irene and Shirley will always be affectionately remembered as "the Hogg girls". Rita was predeceased by her loving husband Erick in 2013, also her parents, Hilda and Sydney Hogg, and her brother-in-law Tom Stobart. At Rita's request, cremation has taken place. A private family burial and a celebration of Rita's life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the warm, caring and compassionate staff of West Park Manor Personal Care Home. We could not have asked for a better place for Mum's final four years. You all became family to Mum, and also to us. We know that you enriched our mother's life so much, but in Mum's final days, the family was comforted by so many visits from staff members at West Park Manor, who shared with us how Mum also enriched their lives. If friends so desire, donations can be made in Rita's name to Grace Hospital Foundation, 300 Booth Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7, or to West Park Personal Care Home, 3199 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3R 3R1. Mum taught us the importance of family, and for that we will all be forever grateful. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Worked with Rita and was taught by her how to use the cash register and work in the gift shop. She was my favorite person to work with in all my 22 years of being at the Grace Hospital in various departments over the years. Just retired in January & just heard of her passing. My condolences to Lynda and her family - such a great person. She will be missed. - Posted by: Alice Fraser (Friend) on: Mar 16, 2018

  • Rita and Erik were our dearest friends when we lived in Winnipeg for 20 years and wanted to thank Janice for letting me know of the sad news and my thoughts are with the family. I will always remember her and our close friendship. - Posted by: Marjorie Minke (Friend) on: Mar 05, 2018

  • Rita and Erick did so much for our family. I'll always remember their kindness and support for us when our father passed and in the many years after that. - Posted by: Peter Grenfell (friend and former neighbour) on: Feb 25, 2018

  • Condolences to Rita's family: I visit someone on Rita's Ward - and I always found her so delightful! Rita was very friendly and would always welcome me if she was down on the main floor and ask if she could help me! Or if on the 2nd flr was always so cheerful and friendly. I was surprised to see her age - I would never have guessed. Rita always looked so lovely and always wore her jewelry. I will miss seeing her when I go to visit my friend. Please accept my sympathy. - Posted by: ELFIE MARTENS (VISITOR AT WPM) on: Feb 24, 2018
