DOROTHY ARMSTRONG Peacefully, in her sleep, Dorothy (Dot) Jane Ann Armstrong (nee Gray) was received into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at the age of 94. Mom leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her son, Glen, her daughter Joan (Gary) Hutchinson and their children Sean (Breanne) and Adam Boughton, Kyle (Vedrana) and Tara Hutchinson. She was predeceased by her husband Simon in January, 2000, her parents, John and Jemima Gray, her brother Russell at birth and her twin sister Grace in infancy. Mom was born in Motherwell, Scotland on February 12, 1924 to John and Jemima (Nan) Gray. In 1929, at the tender age of 5, Mom made the long journey to Canada with her parents to begin a new life. Her family settled in Elmwood, where Mom attended King George V School and was an active participant in the life of Grey Street United Church. She assumed the role of church organist in her mid-teens and spent the majority of her life with her hands on a keyboard. Mom was very active in the International Order of Job's Daughters during her teen years and would later support her daughter, Joan, in this endeavor. In 1952, Mom married Simon Armstrong, whom she met while working at the Royal Bank. They settled in Norwood, where they raised their two children, Joan (born 1956) and Glen (born 1958). For many years, Mom committed all her time and energies to being a supportive wife, mother and homemaker to her family. She faithfully served the Lord in the congregation of Norwood United Church for over 50 years, participating in the choir, UCW, ladies' bible study group and anywhere else her time and gifts were needed. She was also very active in Job's Daughters for many years, where her musical talents were welcomed and appreciated. In the early 1970s, Mom re-entered the workforce as a secretary and settled into 10 years of service with the Federal Government before retiring in 1986. Music was in her blood and, when she wasn't singing in a choir or playing an organ or piano, she enjoyed attending performances at Rainbow Stage, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Theatre Centre if there was a musical event in the city, she was there, usually with a few friends in tow. Mom loved sharing time with her grandchildren and spent countless hours baby-sitting Sean and Adam, particularly during the years when Joan was raising her boys as a single parent. Her loving attention was truly a blessing. We are very grateful to the staff at Poseidon Care Centre, whose loving and supportive care of Mom over the past seven years allowed her to maintain her dignity, privacy and independence to the fullest extent possible and whose kindness and affection made Mom feel at home and well cared for. A celebration of Mom's life will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 11:00 am at St. Mary's Road United Church, 613 St. Mary's Road, Winnipeg. Cremation has taken place and a lunch reception will follow the service. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations may be made in Dot's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4G2 or the Arthritis Society Manitoba Division, 100A 1465 Buffalo Place, Winnipeg, MB, R3T 1L8.
