Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryELIZABETH (BETTY) LOWE SMITH (nee HARRIS) Elizabeth (Betty) Lowe Smith passed away peacefully on February 15, 2018, at Sarsfield Colonial Home, near Ottawa, at the age of 90, with family at her side. Betty is survived by her children Rick (Simone) in Whitehorse and Nancy (Joel) in Ottawa; grandchildren Stephen, Lyndsay, Kristian (Natalie), Hayley (John) and Ian; sisters-in-law Eileen and Ruth; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Vern, sister and brother-in-law Ethel and Wilf, and brothers Jim and Ron. Betty was born at home in Fort Garry in a December blizzard, and attended General Steele and General Byng schools. She and Vern married during the Great Flood of 1950, and since they couldn't drive to Minneapolis for their honeymoon, they rolled up their sleeves and filled sandbags instead. Betty wore many hats throughout her life, including: portrait artist, model, secretary, world traveller (thanks to the wonderful opportunities through Vern's work at CP Air and in the travel industry), volunteer driver at the 1967 and 1999 Pan-Am Games, Manitoba certified fitness leader, breast cancer survivor, dragon boat paddler, movie extra ("Shall We Dance" and "You Kill Me"), recipient of the Governor General's Caring Canadian Award, but perhaps most importantly, hugger extraordinaire! Funeral service and reception will be held at St. Georges Anglican Church, 168 Wilton Avenue at Grosvenor, Saturday, March 17, at 11:00 a.m. with The Reverend Simon Blaiklie officiating. Interment to follow at Thomson "In the Park" Cemetery, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Sarsfield Colonial Home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society, CancerCare Manitoba, or a charity of your choice. "Keep smiling through, just like you always do." I was honored and blessed to have the privilege of meeting and working with Betty at Panache Model mgmt. Betty was always so eager to embrace an opportunity and welcome a new challenge. She approached modelling as she approached life; positive, beaming her wonderful smile, and full of boatloads of charm! She just had a way of brightening your day and was truly a joy filled person. I looked forward to hearing of her next new adventure or activity. She also could not hide her love and affection for her partner Vern, whom I was lucky to meet several times. She was truly genuine and an inspiration to all! I would often tell her when I reach your age; I hope I am half the women you are. A great soul serves everyone all the time. A great soul never dies. It brings us together again and again. ~Maya Angelou My prayers go out to her family and friends as you celebrate the remarkable life and memories of Betty. The angels are rejoicing as a good soul has found it's way home. - Posted by: Melissa Campbell (Panache Model Mgmt) on: May 07, 2018

I was one of the lucky ones Betty chose to paint for her “Faces of Courage” series. She was a deeply caring, effective person who made such a positive contribution to lives of her friends and the community. My sincere sympathy to Betty’s beloved family, Nadia Evans. - Posted by: Nadia Evans (Friend) on: Mar 17, 2018
