HARTMUT (HART) OPPERMANN After a lengthy illness, Hart passed away peacefully on February 27, 2018 at the Gimli Community Health Centre, with his loving wife Carol by his side. Left to mourn his passing are his wife Carol, and their precious Peggy whom he loved so much and will miss him beyond words. Also surviving Hart is his sister Roselind Fuith, nephews Ernie Keller Jr. and Jason Fuith (Laurie Fischer), nieces Kersten Fuith (Hart Posen) and Nancy Smith (Dan), great-nephews Samson and Benjamin Keller, Kieran and Cole Smith, and Aidan and Zachary Fuith, great-nieces Bailey Keller and Sasha Posen, mother-in-law Mary Harder (Harvey Lunn), brothers-in-law Ron (Roberta Goldman), John (Annie) and Wayne (Cathy), nieces Andrea Halverson (Kevin), Meron Harder, and nephews Jordan Harder, Sanni Harder and Liam Harder. Hart was predeceased by his parents Emma and Oskar Oppermann, sister Gisela Keller, brother-in-law Ernie Keller Sr., nieces Susan Keller and Kim Fuith, and father-in-law Jake Harder. Hart was born on June 28, 1953 in Grossenhain, Germany and immigrated with his parents and two sisters to Winnipeg in June 1957. Hart grew up in the West End and graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1977 with a Bachelor of Education. In 1977, Hart and Carol moved to Leaf Rapids to start Hart's teaching career with the intent on staying for one year. They spent 28 years living in the north and truly enjoyed all that it had to offer, 15 of those years were spent at the cabin he designed and built with his good friend Denis on Eden Lake. They moved to Winnipeg Beach in 2005 and Hart continued to substitute teach at Teulon Collegiate until March 2014. While in Winnipeg Beach, Hart designed our retirement home that was completed in July 2009. It is the perfect house and he incorporated all of our dreams in his plans. His yard was his passion, creating and tending to his gardens and made every bird around welcome in his many birdhouses. Hart spent countless hours during his illness just watching his birds. During his 37 years of teaching, his students were his top priority. He just wanted to share with them the best that he could offer, with his many stories, rewarding them with candies and sharing his favourite pastime, food. Hart lived a full life, which included fishing, walking and most of all appreciating nature. Hart absolutely loved food, and spent many days with his sister Gisele visiting restaurants that served the strangest cuisine. Hart spent summers with his sister Roselind foraging through the forest near Belair for wild mushrooms, a tradition they carried on from their parents. We had the opportunity to travel extensively visiting Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, United States and most of Canada. During his illness, Hart was still able to visit Hawaii, go on three cruises, take a train trip through the Canadian Rockies, and this past summer a road trip to the Okanogan so he could eat a peach off a tree. Carol would like to thank Dr. S. V. Patel, Julie and Tanis of CancerCare Gimli for their overwhelming support and professionalism shown to Hart throughout his illness, Dr. J. Fulmore and the staff of Gimli Community Health Centre for their compassion and respect, and making the last part of Hart's journey comfortable and peaceful. A special thanks to our many friends for their prayers, phone calls and just always being there for us during Hart's illness. To our family and friends for being with us during the past few weeks in the hospital sharing stories, laughing, and shedding a few tears as we celebrated Hart's life. At Hart's request, there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, and in honour of Hart's love of children, donations to CancerCare Manitoba, Pediatric Cancer Research, 1160-675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0V9 would be appreciated. "Successful is the person who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much, who has gained the respect of children, who leaves the world better than they found it, who has never lacked appreciation for the earth's beauty, who never fails to look for the best in others or give the best of themselves." Hart always came to check things out in the Home Ec. room or came in to use the phone just as we were taking something out of the oven. The students loved him! Carol and family-he will be remembered for his strong, positive, personality! Rest in peace, Hart. - Posted by: Beth Smith (Colleague (I taught Home Ec. across the hall from Hart in Leaf Rapids)) on: May 09, 2018

Mr. Opperman was one of my favourite teachers. He always brought things to life and made his classes interesting. He would even go above and beyond. I remember when he brought every kind of cheese to class that he could find so that the class could try them all. I remember trying feta for the first time and the unveiling of the blue cheese at the end that was not so pleasant lol. And his story of how he cut up his finger when putting it in the lawnmower plade not thinking it would start moving. Hart definitely made a difference in a lot of lives and mine for sure. I was lucky to have him as a teacher. He will always be remembered and missed. Condolences to his family. - Posted by: Jennifer Matthews (Previous student) on: Mar 16, 2018

Carol, I am so sorry to hear of Hart's passing. I was aware he had not been well and as a result getting together more frequently was simply not in the cards. I am so happy that you both were able to travel and enjoy being together. Since our first meeting in Leaf Rapids when the town was in close down mode, we became friends and I am so thankful this relationship continued following your move to southern Manitoba. Hart's manner was so honest, loyal and pleasant which always made getting together a joy. Seeing the tributes from his students truly says everything about this man, he was a complete teacher who cared deeply and he will be remembered with love and respect. - Posted by: Bob Spiers (Friend of both Hart and Carol) on: Mar 05, 2018

Well Mr. Oppermann was and will always be remembered by having a basket of chocolate and candies for us if we were on task and completing work. Also being a presence and friendly face in the school during my time there. Missing you Mr.Oppermann - Posted by: Cameron Flamand (Former Student at Teulon Collegiate ) on: Mar 05, 2018

To Carol and Family My thoughts and prayers to you all at this time. Hart was such a unique individual with such a positive outlook on life. His approach with the students at Teulon Collegiate made him our most popular and respected substitute. The stories he could tell would entertain you and make you stop and think about things you wouldn’t have before. He was always our biggest fan and our teams always appreciated him coming and cheering them - no matter where they were playing! His cowbell and his “yeehaw” at games put a smile on everyone’s faces. Students looked forward to his “quizzes and chocolates” and he made sure all students had a question they could answer. We loved having him as part of our staff and missed his presence when he finally retired. He said it was time for the younger ones to take over. There has been many times in the past few years I have thought about him while calling subs....always hoped he was relaxing and enjoying life. I am so glad you both got to travel and experience as much as you did together. Please know, he will always be a part of TCI. - Posted by: Wendy Enstrom (Friend) on: Mar 04, 2018

Mr.Opperman was one of the best teachers we ever had in Leaf Rapids. He was a awesome jolly teacher, that gave his students treats when we solved a math problem. He even treated us to these awesome feasts of different cultural foods, that we had never tasted, like his favourite German foods, ice cream and candies... but it was only if we worked hard on our math. I will never forget this man, he made teaching fun. - Posted by: Bianca Dionne (Teacher/friend) on: Mar 04, 2018

Just wanted say I was so sad to hear the news of Hart’s passing. He was such a great person. He was a big part of Teulon Collegiate and our students favorite Sub. He was our sports teams biggest fan!!! I coach the Girls Basketball teams at TCI and Hart would always come out and support us even if we were on the road. It meant so much to the girls in 2015 at Provincials in Souris when Hart drove their for the final and surprised the girls. He brought his cowbell and started off after our first basket with his trademark “ we want another one just like the other one we want more”. Hart was such a huge part of the teams I coached as our biggest fan. I will miss you Hart and hope you are watching us now from upstairs. I will never forget you my friend. Have been friends for35+ years. Have had many a laugh, and shed a few tears. Can still remember the shocks when he first told us he had that disease called cancer. So many memories, good and bad. After Leaf Rapids we would only see each other a couple times a year but even those short visits were precious. Brucer as he called Bruce tormented him lots, but he always laughed at the practical jokes. Fishing partners at the Eden Lake fishing derby, and horseshoe partners. Trip to Newfoundland where he was determined to try every type of fish that he could get. He will be remembered fondly. - Posted by: Bruce and Liz Gulliford (Friends) on: Mar 03, 2018

My family and I, want to wish sincere condolences to you Carol and your family. I know this must be so hard for you. We have many many fond memories of Hart, that go way back, to 35 years ago when we first went to Leaf Rapids and he was so excited to take us fishing , and the stories and his laughter was contagious. Also this past summer at Andreas wedding, he had us in stitches and never for a moment did he mention his illness. He will truly be missed. We love you Hart. Helia and family. - Posted by: Helia Andrafe (Friend) on: Mar 03, 2018
