RUTH ELLEN COCKBURN
Date of Passing: Feb 25, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryRUTH ELLEN COCKBURN 1948 - 2018 Ruth Ellen's heart was filled with love, laughter and family. She was our wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother and friend. She touched our hearts in many ways. Ruth passed away on February 25, 2018 at the age of 70. She was born and raised in Alton, Illinois. After her high school graduation she attended university in Greeley, Colorado where she met her best friend and loving husband, Gord. Together they travelled North to Canada and made Winnipeg home. Mom and Dad raised three children, Carly (Jeff), Kati (Shane) and Christopher (Ania). Ruth spent many years at home raising her children and as the children grew older, she returned to her teaching career. Ruth loved her job and enjoyed teaching students of all ages. As grandchildren were welcomed into the family, Ruth retired from the Winnipeg School Division to spend time with Kayleigh, Michael, Matthew, Charlie and Luke. In retirement, her winters were spent travelling throughout the United States and even one trip to Italy. Summers were spent at the lake, where she loved taking care of her gardens and watching the birds (and bears) she attracted to her feeders. Most recently she found a new passion of quilting and made many new friends, along with beautiful quilts for her grandchildren. She leaves her mother June, her sister Rebecca (Mike) and nieces, Grace and Olivia behind. Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The celebration will be held at The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Winnipeg, 603 Wellington Crescent. All are welcome to come share stories of Mom and celebrate along with the family. In lieu of flowers and in recognition of a passion of Mom's, we ask you to consider a donation to Heifer International. Lee's and my thoughts and prayers are with Gordie and family. I have such wonderful memories of Ruthie and Gordie spending time at the Allbutt cottage in Whytewold. Ruthie was always a joy to be around and her smile was contagious. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Debra Jensen (cousin-in-law) on: Mar 29, 2018

My late husband Bill and myself, Barb, had a very special friendship with Ruth and Gordon for over 40 years. We had many wonderful times together over the years and we were very fortunate to have them with Ruth and Gordon. Ruth was a very caring, endearing friend who made our day with her infectious sense of humor. We were more than friends, we were family that got along great. Ruth and I were expecting our first child in 1975 with Keith in January and Carly in August. It was a time when pregnancy clothes were worn so I happily gave mine to Ruth. We shared many special occasions at Thanksgiving, Easter and Christmas's with all the children growing up together. We would miss Ruth and Gordon whenever they visited their families in the States in the winter, but got together as soon as they returned. Happily, we came to be Aunty Barb and Uncle Bill to Carly, Katie and Chris including the grandchildren. I have lost a very close friend and will miss her very much but the precious memories will remain in my heart. You were a special gift in my life Ruth and may you Rest In Peace.
