Freddie Denis Starr passed away at his residence in Sandy Bay First Nation on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at the age of 62 years. Freddie was born August 26, 1955 in Neepawa, MB to Doris and Howard Starr. Freddie attended Sandy Bay School and then attended Amaranth Collegiate. He attended University of Manitoba where he took a course in Agriculture. He completed a welding course from Assiniboine Community College. Freddie helped his dad on the ranch with the cows and race horses. He worked for Sandy Bay First Nation for over 30 years where he was employed as an Employment Counselor and Director of Operation and then as Director of Housing. He also worked with the Manitoba Association of Native Firefighters during the flood of 2011-2012. Freddie received numerous awards for his work with CMHC for his work with SBFN. Freddie's hobbies included golf, watching hockey games, hunting ducks, geese, deer, moose, elk and snaring rabbits. He enjoyed fishing every spring by Ste. Rose. Freddie enjoyed playing golf and hunting with his sons, brothers, nephews and brothers-in-law. Freddie worked tirelessly for his home community in Sandy Bay. He will be forever missed by his coworkers and especially his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Doris Starr and godparents, Sarah and Joseph Beaulieu. He is survived by his children, Virgil, Freddie Jr., Stephen, Gregory and Blanche, and their mother Loretta Starr; Dillon, Cal, Howard and Morning and their mother Sandi Starr; special companion Candace Gregory and her children, Cassandra and Sage; 16 grandchildren and expecting grandchild from Blanche; brothers, Mervin (Sylvia), Stanley (Dodi), Cecil, and Russell (Carla); sisters, Audrey, Joan, Gloria (Lyle), Delores (Jim), Mary (Jeff), and Lisa (Randy); special coworker and friend Dianne Beaulieu; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Viewing will be held at Clarke's Funeral Chapel, Gladstone on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. Wake will be held at Candi's house at 6:00 p.m. (151 Centre Rd., SBFN), then Thursday, March 8 at Freddie's house at 12:00 noon (179 Lake Rd. N., SBFN). Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Sandy Bay First Nation, with Father José Cabral officiating.
