CONSTANCE GAYLE POULIOT (nee SHOUP) In memory of a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother Constance Gayle Shoup was born July 23, 1938 in Winnipeg to parents Herman and Evelyn Shoup (nee Hart). Gayle was the youngest of three children. She was predeceased by her brother William (Bill), and sister Carol. Gayle went to Teachers' College in Winnipeg and retained a job as a teacher at Cedar Lake where she met her husband Armand (Pete) Pouliot. They married in 1958 and lived at Cedar Lake where David and Michael were born. They moved to Grand Rapids in 1964 where Zoe and William (Bill) were born. After Armand's semi-retirement in 1972, they moved to The Pas, where Julia was born. Gayle and Armand owned a hotel in Grand Rapids during the boom of the mining and hydroelectric development period in Northern Manitoba. Raising a family in a town where there is only one way in and one way out is a challenge for anyone, but Gayle was resourceful and provided a comfortable home and loving environment for her family. Many wonderful memories were made during summers spent at Clearwater Lake with Mom while Dad stayed at the hotel working. When they sold the hotel in Grand Rapids in 1972, Gayle, Armand and her family moved to The Pas where she retained an office position at ManFor. They lived there for many years before Armand passed away in 1984 and Gayle moved to Winnipeg in 1990. She eventually moved into Betelstadur Seniors Co-op in 2012, where she made many new friends. Gayle was a person of strong faith and had a very close relationship with her family including her siblings, children, and extended families. She was always thoughtful and supportive of all members of her family. She emphasized the importance of education to her own children and was a very avid reader. Gayle always wanted to learn - she completed accounting certificates at Keewatin Community College in The Pas and at Red River College in Winnipeg. She also completed an interior design certificate. Gayle enjoyed the arts and painted her own watercolour pictures. She was a big fan of Broadway musicals and classic black and white films. She had a strong spirit of volunteerism manifested through her years volunteering at the Nearly New Shop (in support of Children's Hospital Winnipeg) and at Betelstadur, where she helped with the weekly meal orders, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon coffee, in Betelstadur's convenience store, and assisted the Co-op Board of Directors with minute-taking at meetings. Gayle had many friends and lived life to the fullest - one of her best friends was Grace Lastiwka, a wonderful lady from Scotland - they were kindred spirits and had many happy times and stories to tell. After a short illness, Gayle passed away peacefully on March 5, 2018. Memorial service will be held Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society or any charity of choice. We miss you, we love you always. David and Darlene Pouliot (sons Alexander and Gabriel), Mike and Gayle Pouliot (daughter Amy, husband Dale and son Dominic), Zoe Pouliot and Shawn Nykon (daughter Abby), William Pouliot, and Julia Pouliot. • Gayle very much impressed me when she and her family moved in across the back lane from my family. A very devoted mother, home maker and active with her Church and later places of employment. Gayle was very private in a her life but would always be there for you and others who were in need. What stood out to me was her very strong faith which, I have to say, led me to bring faith into my own life. We had a lot of funny and wonderful bible study get-togethers in our little neighbourhood. We both had experienced some sad times in our lives while we lived together in the Paul and Williams Ave. area of The Pas, MB. So, that's when our faith helped each other through those times. I missed Gayle when she returned to Winnipeg to live but made a point of getting together with her when I made trips to visit my son; and later on making Winnipeg my own home. We then made a point from then on to have a lunch/coffee date at least a couple of times a year. We still had a great connection as our strength in God kept us having such wonderful conversations and a lot of laughs about our craziness days back in The Pas and all the kids keeping us on our toes and hair standing up on ends at times. But it made our lives full and very thankful. I will miss Gayle for all these reasons - she was a wonderful and beautiful person. I am so glad she is with God now - she will be so happy, just as I saw, noticed and felt very much when I went to see her the day before she left us. I have truly felt some of that contentment since then. Gold Bless You Gayle and have a wonderful after life. - Posted by: Sharon Parker (A long time neighbour and friend.) on: Mar 12, 2018

  • Gayle and I worked together at the old Manitoba Telephone System building on Sherbrook, off Portage Avenue; it must have been the summer of 1956. She was a permanent employee; I was temporary, working until I entered Normal School for teacher training. She was a lot of fun, and I remember her interest in painting. She went up north after a year or so, to teach "on permit", which I thought was very brave of her! I recall sending her some ideas for teaching the schoolkids. That was where she met her husband. We lost track of each other, and I ended up going to live and work in France, but I've never forgotten her. I'm glad she had a busy, happy, and productive life as a wife and mother. My condolences to her family. - Posted by: Marnie Webb (Friend) on: Mar 10, 2018
