ROSE DESROCHERS (nee CHICOINE) On Saturday, March 17, 2018 Rose Desrochers passed away peacefully, at the St. Boniface Hospital, at the age of 93 years, with her children by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Oscar in 2000, and granddaughter, Janelle in 2014. Rose is survived by her children, Wilf (Ellen), Claudette (Rod), Lucille (Brad), Marc (Valerie) and Denise (Dennis), her grandchildren, Jamie (Thomas), Adam, Ashlee (Corey), Sherrie (Kirk), Katrina (James), Brian (Jennifer), Vanessa, Danielle (Kevin), Trevor (Erin), and her great-grandchildren, Alexis, Madison, Sydney, Emmett and Kali. She leaves to mourn her sisters, Rita (Al Kent) and Lillianne (Fernand Delaye); predeceased by her parents, Arthur and Alice Chicoine (nee Filteau), and siblings, Alfred (Jeanne Milette), Albina (Henri Blerot), Regina, twin sister Blanche (Jules Pierret), Annette (Lionel Paulhus), Wilfred (Gisele Aubin) and Alcide (Margaret Nissen). Mom was born and raised in Storthoaks, Saskatchewan, and moved to Winnipeg in her early 20s (her dad wanted her to stay on the farm, but she decided she no longer wanted to milk the cows and feed the chickens). She got a job at St. Boniface Hospital where she took a fancy to the elevator operator, Oscar, and later married. They were married for 48 years. She was a homemaker for the first 14 years while raising their five children. She then worked at the Windsor Theatre until they closed their doors in 1976. They had a home in St. Vital until 1996 when they moved to an apartment at Kirchhoff Gardens on Dakota Street. Mom knitted hundreds of teddy bears for Doctors Without Borders, along with hundreds of mitts, hats and scarves for the needy. Mom loved making puzzles, crosswords, knitting, carpet bowling, bingo and volunteering at the tuck shop. But most of all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, and attended many of their sports and recreational activities. She would often tell others how much she loved her family. Mom was always very independent, until 2015 when she suffered a fall and could no longer live on her own. She then moved to a care home, and not a day went by without her children visiting her. It soon became routine for Mom to enjoy an ice cream and make a jigsaw puzzle or play cards with us. Towards the end, Mom grew more tired and our visits became shorter. She suffered a severe stroke on March 14 and went to the hospital by ambulance. She was able to say goodbye to her children and grandchildren by a squeeze of the hand, then wiggle her fingers to indicate it was someone else's turn. Mom made us laugh right to the end. We will miss her terribly. Not a day will go by that we will not think of her. As per Mom's wishes, a private family service will be held. We wish to thank the exceptionally wonderful and truly compassionate nurses who cared for her at the St. Boniface Hospital in her last days. Their attendance to her every need was remarkable. • I have been thinking of you and I offer you my sympathies. I regret not doing it in person but it is important to honor our dear ones wishes. As it turned out, the weather cooperated with her wishes and we probably wouldn't have been able to attend! I loved your Mom as she was so understanding and we knew she really cared for us. Her love for her family was so evident and in return she was loved by you all. What a beautiful family! Sylvianne - Posted by: Sylvianne Revet (cousin to Aunt Rose's family) on: Mar 25, 2018
