AUDREY ETHELLA JONES
Born: Mar 29, 1928
Date of Passing: Mar 29, 2018
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryAUDREY ETHELLA JONES 1928 - 2018 Our dear Auntie Audrey Jones (aka Miss Jones!) passed away March 29, 2018 precisely on her 90th birthday. She will be lovingly remembered by her niece Jerrilyn Jones, her nephews Martin, Brian, Peter and Andrew Jones and their families. Audrey was predeceased by her parents Elizabeth Amelia (Ethella) and Percy Victor Ernest Jones, her brothers E. Lloyd Jones and Ralph Jones, nephew Greg, and niece Margot Jones. Audrey was born in Winnipeg and lived there her entire life. She attended Gordon Bell High School and the University of Manitoba. She graduated with a BSc and was the Lady Stick of the Faculty of Science. Audrey was a gifted student-athlete, a successful coach, an exceptional educator and most of all a force of nature. She taught at Tec Voc from its founding in 1951 until her retirement in 1985. She maintained close ties with the school after her retirement and in 2004 the physical education and music wing of the school was named the Audrey Jones Field House. In 2012 she was inducted into the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association Hall of Fame in their Builder Category. Audrey loved her work and she loved her "kids". We believe she invented tough love...or at the very least perfected it. She said in an interview in the Winnipeg Free Press in 2004 that she "didn't like Saturdays because it meant I wasn't working". Time not spent at the school was often spent with her bell ringers. Her Service of Remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 6, 2018 at McClure United Church. The service will be followed by a luncheon reception in the Church hall and a private family burial service will be held at Brookside Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. The family would like to thank the staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their care for Audrey. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 204-925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

My Mother, Barbara (Haining) Brown, and Audrey were life-long friends. Unfortunately, geography and ill health kept them apart in the last years of their lives. Our family always looked forward to “Aunt” Audrey’s trips to the “east”, as she termed them. Aunt Audrey was always full of life, enthusiasm and love for us and our interests. When we were growing up, she always encouraged us to do our best and to love sports, although she drew a line at gymnastics. Aunt Audrey even more or less accepted that our spouses might be good enough for us, once we got to the marrying age. When we had children, Aunt Audrey was just as wonderful to them as she had been to us. I was late in learning of Audrey’s death, but it is nice to know that she was so well loved and had such a positive impact on the lives of others. We loved her and will miss her. - Posted by: Audrey Mason and family (Favorite pretend niece and namesake) on: Nov 27, 2018

You were an amazing person to all that knew you. You touched many hearts and changed so many lives. For me you made me realize that you can become and do what you want in life. It is there for the taking. For that I thank you. I went into banking and became very sucessful at my job. Won many awards throughout my career. Bless you Ms Jones for everything. - Posted by: Donna (Student from Tec Vic) on: Jun 29, 2018

Audrey Jones will always be remembered as she mentored the girls for gym. In those early days of the school, R.J. (Dick) Johns was principal and Fred Merrett was the music instructor. I played in the band and we associated a lot with Audrey and her majorettes. Every student made certain to avoid the wrath of "Miss Jones", but still thought the world of her. Those were good days of fond memories. We saw "Jonesie" a few times over the years, and saw her a few times when she was in Deer Lodge. By that time, she had become "Audrey" to us but, even then, she took charge and told us where to sit in her room. Audrey will be fondly remembered. - Posted by: Charles (Chic) Seabrook (former student) on: Apr 22, 2018

I remember Audrey Jones very well, because she was a friend of my mother's. My mother, (Muriel) Jean Turnbull, was also actively involved in the music at McClure United Church. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. - Posted by: Margaret Turnbull (Fellow church member) on: Apr 07, 2018

One thing I remember about Miss Jones was her saying to us, if you want to smoke, don't bother doing any sports. I wasn't a star athlete but she instilled in me that if I tried hard enough I could do it. Thank you. - Posted by: Heather Wenzel nee Bain (Friend and former student.) on: Apr 06, 2018

I'm fairly certain this is the Audrey Jones from Greenwood United, who was our Sunday school teacher. A person I have never forgotten. At 12-13 years of age back in the 50s life was so different from today, you can't imagine. I owe a lot of my values, my attitudes to her guidance at that most important and happy time. I believe I saw her again at my father's funeral (June 1997) but she came and went like a gust of wind. I regret not telling her these thoughts at that time. To all those grieving, this was a life well lived. I have a photo of our class - if I can figure how to send it I will. - Posted by: David Knowles (in her Sunday School Class @ Greenwood United) on: Apr 04, 2018

Words cannot describe what Miss Jones did for me in High School at Tec Voc. I was honoured to be part of her bell ringing choir. Everyone in heaven better stand tall and play the right bell at the right time. The world just got a lot smaller and a lot quieter. RIP Miss Jones. - Posted by: Cathie Poulton (nee Bell) (Former Student) on: Apr 04, 2018

The incomparable, undauntng, "force to be reckoned with" Miss Jones has taken her place alongside many other angels in heaven. As a former student - 1960's - I have fond memories of my band and glee club days. Audrey - you were an inspiration to me and likely many, many others. Rest in peace. You will be missed. Well, Miss Audrey Jones you were an outstanding woman, "a real go and concern" type of gal. I saw you last week, we talked and shook hands wishing each other good will. Myself and many others will miss you at Deer lodge. D. Kirkup - Posted by: Diane Kirkup (Friend) on: Apr 03, 2018

I am so sad to learn of Audrey's passing. This lady was definitely a positive role model for young women. She taught me a lot about myself & was definitely a woman who was able to teach how to set your own personal high set of standards in self-reliance, self-worth, & self-respect. Being a student & member of track, & basketball; she had a huge impact on my life & my overall attitude toward personal work ethics. She was one of the toughest teachers & coaches I ever encountered & the one I highly regarded & respected the most. It was amazing running into her many years after I graduated & she remembered me, quoting what sports I participated in & remembering that I broke a school Track & Field record. One amazing lady & the sparkle of the world is dimmer without her. - Posted by: Sue Boyce (Former Student 1974 Grad, BB & Track) on: Apr 03, 2018

I absolutely loved Miss Jones. I left Jr High at JB Mitchell, small school! Went to Tec Voc for 10 - 12. Miss Jones was wonderful to me almost like a second mother. I joined as many sports as I could and loved every minute at Tec Voc because of her. She was very strict but had a heart of gold. I thought of her often over the years! Rest In Peace Audrey you were my favourite teacher! - Posted by: Donna Chaisson (Student 1963 - 1965) on: Apr 03, 2018

Oh Miss Jones Heaven will be so much brighter with you there! As one of your former Bell Ringers I can be confident that you will whip those angels into shape to create some beautiful heavenly music! I have thought about you so much over the years and will continue to do so every time I use the word "unobtrusive" with my 4 kids or my students or staff in my workplace. My appreciation and understanding of music is all thanks to you. You had such high expectations of all of your students which taught us to have high expectations of ourselves. You also made me understand math to which I have to say another huge thanks. Many things I learned from traveling with you on those road trips stays with me today. Every country homestead I see off the highway I still analyze to what you would say " if the barn is nicer than the house then the man is in charge, if the house is nicer than the barn, then the woman is in charge" I smile every time I think of that! I walked down the isle on my wedding day to music from our record we made together. Thank you for that experience. As much as you were the most demanding teacher I ever knew, I have to say that I am an even more demanding teacher than you! Taught by the best! Miss Jones, I am privileged to have known you and learned from you and know that many will miss you! One less flower on earth, one new light in heaven! At the time of being a student, was involved in operettas, band, gym and many events with Miss Jones. Many of us at the time did not see the value of the strength she had and her determination. As I look back now and see the life changes that happened during those times, I am very thankful for the times in her classes. She was devoted, forever on the go, never taking no for an answer because she knew we could do better. Thank you Audrey for the life lessons you taught and for your tenacity. Many of your students are probably dancing with you in heaven and the rest of us will meet you in the future. You left many memories and taught many of us the determination and realization that yes, life is not a free ride. But what you put into it and conquer. Thank you again. My prayers are with the family. "Well done My good and faithful servant" are the words I hope you are hearing now. Blessings - Posted by: Diane Wilson (Student) on: Apr 03, 2018
