ERWIN FRIEDRICH SCHMIDT 1925 - 2018 With great sadness the family of Erwin Schmidt announce the peaceful passing of their dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. After an extended fight with cancer, Dad passed away at Jocelyn House, on Easter Monday, April 2, 2018, at the age of 93 years. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 64 years, Jeanne; their sons, Larry and Bob (Pat), and their daughter Karen (Doug Humiski). He was extremely proud of all his family and delighted in the birth of his great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by granddaughter Clarissa (Tyler Robb and son Nicholas), granddaughter Lisa (Manuel Hildebrandt and son Kayden), grandson Michael (Vanessa and daughter Mackenzie), grandson Daniel, granddaughter Sydney Humiski (fiancé Patrick Richardson), and granddaughter Marlo Humiski. Dad was the second of six siblings and was predeceased by his parents, Friedrich and Rosalie, his sister Ursula (Harry), and brother Herbert (Lorraine). He is survived by brothers, Kurt (Frances) and Richard (Eleanor), sister Vicki (Peter Voth) and an extended family, much too long to list and who all were very dear to his heart. Erwin was born in Waldersee, MB, six months after his parents arrived in Canada. After local schooling, he completed grade 12 at Mennonite Collegiate Institute in Gretna. After Manitoba Teacher's College (the first class at the present site of Canadian Mennonite University) and six years of teaching he became employed by Canadian National Railway as a locomotive fireman on steam locomotives in 1952, and as an engineer in 1960 on diesel electric locomotives. After 36 years on the railroad Erwin retired from Via Rail Passenger Service in 1988. Dad delighted in reunions and contact with friends from all those many years ago. Dad fondly remembered 1949, for that was when Mom walked into his life. Jeanne and Erwin were engaged in April 1952 and married July 4, 1953. They raised their family in the Riverview area and in 2003 moved to Lindenwood Estates. Both were extremely appreciative of the friends and fellowship found there. Dad and Mom enjoyed almost 65 years of happy marriage and during their many retirement years made countless trips, driving to every province in Canada and state in the USA. Even as a young family we travelled on a "no - itinerary" trip to Europe visiting England, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. In their later years, Dad and Mom also travelled the world visiting many other countries and continents. Erwin's faith in God, his loving and pleasant manner, his sense of humour, loyalty and kindness were just part of the man we all knew and loved. He delighted in the company of others and was cheerful until the very end. He was extremely appreciative of the medical care he received and shared his humour with everybody who came near even as his health faded. Throughout his life Dad was grateful for all God's many blessings and made sure everyone in his life knew he counted us as part of them. Funeral services will take place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with viewing taking place on Tuesday, April 10, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or to Jocelyn House. Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • With great sadness, I say goodbye to my Uncle Erwin. My Uncle Erwin was a very social person, loving his music and playing his organ; entertaining his guests and family during get-togethers. He was a man of Faith, and loved his wife, children and grandchildren dearly. Growing up and going to church, I could always count on seeing my aunt and uncle, my cousins; sharing time and the farm where his parents' homestead was; one of my most favourite places to visit! Goodnight, God Bless you, God be with you and keep you. May God make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. You are going home to meet Him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UNOaxLiHbg With deep love, Your niece, Rose Held [Daughter of Harry and Ursula Held (nee Schmidt)] Uncle Erwin...with prayer, I ask that you please extend my love to them and your brother, my Uncle Herbie, and all those who have left this earth. ❤️🙏🏻🌿✝🕊 - Posted by: Rose Held (Niece) on: Apr 10, 2018

  • I can't recall any time that I saw this cousin of mine upset or in a bad mood. He was such an easy-going and loving person -- a great example to those who knew him. Rest joyfully in the arms of Jesus, Erwin! - Posted by: Trudi (Schmidt) Stigge (cousin) on: Apr 09, 2018

  • Erwin was the driver of our wedding car in 1969. He took the time to create a cassette tape which appeared to be a radio announcement, offering congratulations on our marriage! He was just an all round great guy! - Posted by: Karl and Leila Wegert (Relative) on: Apr 08, 2018

  • Sincere condolences to Jeanne and the family. We enjoyed the Schmidts at the Estates for the nine years we have been here. May God give you comfort and peace in your loss. - Posted by: Verna Froese (neighbour) on: Apr 07, 2018

  • My sincere condolences Jean and family. Erwin was a good friend to me. Ray - Posted by: Ray Lussier (Friend M) on: Apr 05, 2018
