MAJOR LEONARD (LEN) MILLAR June 14, 1924 - March 28, 2018 Len was Promoted to Glory on Wednesday, March 28, 2018. Len was born June 14, 1924, and grew up in the East York suburb of Toronto, Ontario. At a young age he was invited to The Salvation Army Sunday School, an invitation he accepted and which shaped the rest of his life. Like many young men, Len volunteered to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces and served in Holland and Germany during the Second World War. Len met Dorothy Knaap at the Salvation Army Church shortly after leaving the military. They were married in 1947 and both attended The Salvation Army College for Officer Training in Toronto. They served as corps officers/pastors in Canada before volunteering for service in Africa. With their three children, they left for South Africa in 1955, where their fourth child was born. In 1963 they received an appointment to Uganda, followed by one to Kenya. Back in Canada for eleven years Len was appointed as Public Relations Officer for The Salvation Army in Regina, Calgary and Winnipeg. In 1980 the call came again from Africa, this time to return to Uganda to help with the rehabilitation of the work of The Salvation Army and the country after the regime of Idi Amin. Five very eventful years were spent there followed by a return to Public Relations in Canada. Another call from Africa to pioneer the work of The Salvation Army in Liberia brought his active service to a close. In retirement Len continued to take opportunities to show his love for people and his original youthful commitment to serve God. He became padre of Branch #1 Royal Canadian Legion and was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of St. James, where he served as president of the Club. His wife Dorothy, children, Len (Ros), Jo (Dale), Cath (John), Pat (Cyril), along with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will always love, honour and respect him for his devotion to God, his lifelong commitment to The Salvation Army and to caring for others. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018 at The Salvation Army Heritage Park Temple, 825 School Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army, Heritage Park Temple- Missions, 825 School Road, Winnipeg, MB R2Y 0S6. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Len was a true friend - sometimes irascible but with a great sense of humour - a lasting memory is the Kiwanis District Convention in Winnipeg in 2002 and seeing Len at the front of Shaarey Zedec synagogue conducting a memorial service, wearing his Salvation Army uniform and a yarmulke. Condolences to Dorothy and their family. - Posted by: Bruce Berven (Friens in Kiwanis) on: Apr 27, 2018

  • Len and Dorthy were wonderful friends for my parents, Burt and Gerry Robinson. Dorthy, the commitment you and Len had to your tireless work was an inspiration to my Dad. Our condolences to you and your family, Ross Robinson - Posted by: Ross Robinson Family (family friend) on: Apr 15, 2018
