JEAN JOSEPH RENE AVANTHAY (RENE AVANTHAY, UNCLE RAINY) August 6, 1936 - April 17, 2018 Peacefully, René Avanthay passed away at Misericordia Health Centre in Winnipeg. He was predeceased by his parents, Gustave and Antoinette (nee Normandeau), and brother F. R. Avanthay. He is survived by his sister Doris Boulanger, nieces Lynne Boulanger (Terry), Jennifer Boulanger and family, nephew Marc Boulanger and family, and great-niece Chantal (Robert) Bergen and family, as well as friends. René was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba. He attended Holy Cross, St. Eugène, and Provencher. For two years, at the time of the flood, he attended St. Boniface College and then returned to Provencher High School, graduating at age 16. He began working for C.N.R. and later worked at Expo '67 in Montréal. He graduated from the University of Manitoba with BFA, honours degree and education. In 1969 he began teaching in Winnipeg School Division No. 1 and St. James Assiniboia School Division No. 2, then to Seine River School Division No. 14 in Lorette and Ste. Anne. He also taught Catechism at St. Joseph and St. Edward. He expressed his love of nature through art, wrote Christian songs, and enjoyed golf. René was an original member of the group Adoremus Te Devote working to promote Perpetual Eucharistic adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, realized at Holy Cross Church. Through St. Theresa's Rosebushes he was able to help young men at seminaries become priests. The firsts are Father Pasala and Father Pulipati. René was a quiet man with a kind and easy-going personality. He will surely be missed by everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing him. Thanks to good friend Roger Riel for his support during René's struggle with Parkinson's disease. Thanks to Cathedrale Manor and nursing staff at Misericordia for all the care. Funeral Mass will be held at the Saint-Boniface Cathedrale on Thursday, April 26 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I was very saddened to hear of Rene's death. I met him briefly once in connection with a very fine drawing and a wonderful painting by him that I own. He was a talented artist and a concerned human being. He quietly contributed much to the Manitoba art community. - Posted by: Gary Essar (art collector) on: Apr 24, 2018

  • My deepest sympathy to you Doris and family, prayers and thoughts are with you. Thinking of you. Germaine in Edmonton, AB - Posted by: Germaine (Tessier) Cook (School friend of Doris, his sister.) on: Apr 21, 2018
