DAVID WILLIAM SWARD "The Birds Hill Park Woodman" On Saturday, April 21, 2018, at the young age of 74, David passed away at Selkirk Hospital after a lengthy fight with bladder cancer. He is survived by Helene, his wife of 50 years, sons Vincent (Christine) and Russell (Andrea), daughter Dale Goulet (Warren), his grandchildren Nicole, Teagan, Charleigh, Hawksley, Raymond, Stephen and Serenity, great-granddaughter Emily, and five stepgrandchildren. He also leaves brother-in-law Brian Everton (Monique), and sister-in-law Irene Mellick (Wayne), and will be remembered by good friends, Carrie, Martin and Caleb Gogela. Born July 10, 1943, he lived in Transcona until 2004, when he moved to Garven Road in the RM of Springfield. He worked as a locomotive engineer for C.N.R. He loved to cook showing off his expertise in CN bunk houses, feeding other crew members. Shortly after retiring from CN he took up long haul trucking. In 1987, Dave and Helene bought Birds Hill Campground Store and Laundromat and operated it seasonally for 30 years retiring in 2016. During this time, they expanded the operation to include the beach concessions in Birds Hill Park and also set up a café as part of the store. He also operated the firewood concession in the park along with his son Vincent. He loved working in the park where he made many friends. Dave and Helene travelled to many sunny, warm destinations, his favourite being Disney World and Cuba and especially loved the Cuban people. But most of all, he loved when his grandchildren came to visit. Thank you to all family and friends who visited him regularly at home and in the hospital, Brian and Monique, Irene and Wayne, cousin Carol and Glenn Chudley, friends Carrie, Martin and Caleb, Edna and Bill, Aneliese, Wayne and Deiter. Thank you to all of the caregivers at Selkirk Hospital for their respectful, loving ways of looking after Dave during the past month he was there. Hey Dave, During this past week we realized that there are things that we neglected to tell you when we had the chance, so here goes: Ed says," You were one of the most interesting guys I've known. I totally enjoyed every opportunity we had to chat." Joan says, "I always admired your generous & caring spirit. I well remember all the great suppers you prepared for us working girls. You even did the cleanup!" We know we're not alone when we say this. "We will miss you, David Sward." - Posted by: Ed & Joan Van Mierlo (friends) on: Apr 27, 2018
