RAYMOND (RAY) STARR Peacefully, with his family by his side, Raymond (Ray) Starr passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018, at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, MB. He was predeceased by his son, Renee; mother, Ruby; sisters, Freddie and Linda; brothers, Herb and Gordie, along with many in-laws, cousins and friends. He leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Connie (nee Young); daughter, Tara; sons, Carlin (Tracy) and Aaron (Amy); dear grandchildren, Kalina and Kaleb, and his furry little friend Copper. Ray was born September 15, 1952 in Pine Falls, Manitoba. He will be remembered foremost as a family man. His wife and kids were his world, and his grandchildren were his biggest joy. Ray spent most of his adult life living in Selkirk where he was an integral member of the community. Through coaching sports, spending his summers with family at Selkirk Park, and supporting many local events and organizations, he met numerous lifelong friends and colleagues. Ray grew up in the West End of Winnipeg and spent most of his young life at Patricia Beach. In 1966 Ray met the love of his life Connie. Connie came from a large family which welcomed Ray with open arms. After many years of teenage adventure, Ray and Connie were married in 1973. Together they raised three children, owned numerous businesses and were graced with their very first grandchild in 2010, followed by another in 2014. Camping was one of Ray's favourite pastimes, enjoying many wonderful days at Rubber Ducky Campground with family, and touring the countryside with his beloved wife. Ray was a proud member of the Sarasens "Old-boys" Rugby Club, an avid snowmobile enthusiast, player and lover of hockey, football, soccer, and broomball. Among many things, Ray was a lifelong educator with a continuous drive and passion to improve the lives of those in the aboriginal and non aboriginal communities. Through work with his company, Anokiiwin Training Institute, and more recently Aki Energy, he thrived to make a difference through education and training. Ray, Poppa, Poppa Ray, Ray-Ray, Big Ray, Rescue Ray, Rammy Ray, Porky, Big Guy, among many others, you will be truly missed. We would like to thank the medical teams at Selkirk Regional Health Centre and Health Sciences Centre for their wonderful care during Ray's short illness. A celebration of Ray's life will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel in Selkirk, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ray's name to the Manitoba Habitat for Humanity. • Deepest sympathy on Ray's passing, from someone you knows how this feels. John enjoyed his electrical work when it included Ray on the job with him. He considered Ray to be such a knowledgable, skilled and safe electrician to work with. I think back to the winter of 1980/81 when the guys were working in Thompson and, you and I Connie had an apartment together with little Tara as a new baby. I remember the "brown dollar parties" we used to have! Fun memories! Cherish all your memories for as much as Ray's physical presence is absent from your life now, nothing can ever take away all the great memories πŸ˜’πŸ™πŸ» - Posted by: Barbara Larkin (Friend) on: May 02, 2018

  • Hello Connie and family. It has been a long time since we spent time together in our early years in Canada but we remember time at the caboose and the time the four of us went fishing on Lake Winnipeg and the boat got stuck on a sandbar. Dave and Ray trying to lift the motor off the bar. Over the years we have told this story many times and our family overseas cannot comprehend how we could get out of the boat and stand on a sandbar in the middle of such a huge lake. Hope the very many happy family and friend memories with Ray will help to get you through the weeks ahead. Love and Best Wishes. • Our sincere condolences to Aunty Connie and the whole Starr family. Uncle Ray or (Big Ray) as I would call him was such an easy going fun guy with such a positive outlook. He was an awesome uncle to me, my brothers and all of my cousins. So many great memories from my childhood with Uncle Ray right through our adult years. Some of these memories included going out to the caboose Uncle Ray & Aunty Connie had on the Brokenhead River, family BBQs and horseshoe tournaments at their place in Selkirk and Christmas functions/Santa night and many others. One real special memory was going to the sold out 1999 World Junior Hockey Championship Gold Medal hockey game at the old Winnipeg Arena between Team Canada and Team Russia with Uncle Ray and my brothers. The game was completed sold out, I was lucky enough to have a friend who worked security at the arena and got us all in. We ended up sitting in the players section with all the players from Team Sweden that year including the Sedin Twins. Uncle Ray was a huge hockey guy and was like a kid in a candy store watching this big game and talking with all these future NHL Players. Thinking about this fun time with my uncle puts a smile on my face at this difficult time and something I will always remember. Rest in peace Uncle Ray (Big Ray) we are all going to miss you dearly. • Hi Connie and Family. It is with great sadness I heard of Ray’s passing from Jess. I often think back when Ray , Jess, John, myself and the 2085 boys worked at Cullerton Lake goldmine in the NWT. and other numerous northern Manitoba projects. Ray was a top notch electrician. When Ray hired onto a project which I was supervising, he would be my first pick as Foreman. I would also pick Ray to take over my position when I went on leave. His knowledge of the trade, reliability and dedication guaranteed an outstanding product. We would like to offer our sincere Condolences to you and your Family.
