LILLIAN ALICE HOEY (nee FLOYDE) January 1, 1923 - April 28, 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother on April 28, 2018, at the age of 95. Lillian passed away peacefully in her sleep at Misericordia Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg. Lillian is predeceased by her husband of 53 years, James Hoey; and her siblings, Len Floyde, Tom Floyde, Mary MacGregor, Bill Floyde and Lindy Floyde. Lillian is lovingly remembered by her children, Jim (Elizabeth), Jean Tinling (Lynne Pinterics), and Doug (Linda Miller); her grandchildren, Heather and Craig (Heather), Tasha, Miska (Terry) and Celene (Shawn); her great-grandchildren, Sydney and Hudson; and numerous other members of her extended family, many good friends and hundreds of former students. Born in McCreary, Manitoba, Lillian graduated from Normal School in Winnipeg in 1945 and taught for a year before following her love and future husband Jim to Glasgow, Scotland, where they were married in 1947. She taught school in Glasgow, Scotland for two years before returning to Winnipeg where she taught Kindergarten out of her basement until her children were all in public school. In 1960, she returned to the public school system, where she taught grade one until she retired at 70 years of age. Lillian was a teacher. Everyone knew her as Mrs. Hoey, except Dad. His endearing name for her was always 'Goldylocks'. Mrs. Hoey taught grade one until she retired at age 70; but more than teaching grade one; she taught children to read. Generations of students learned to read under her instruction and care; and many of those students, their children and often grandchildren would keep in touch thanking 'Mrs. Hoey' for teaching them how to read. One former grade one student and special friend, Laurie Jolly continued to visit her even when she was in the care home until her last days. Lillian loved family, and would go to great lengths to try to have family get togethers on every and any occasion. She always acknowledged birthdays and anniversaries with a card and a gift and whenever possible, a family get together and a cake. As family members moved away, that became increasingly difficult, but she did her best and never forgot - and she will always be remembered lovingly for that. Mom always had a special place in her heart for animals. Lillian's last years were made richer and happier when Craig brought her a little lost puppy, Gus, who very much became the center of her life. The family would like to thank the staff at Misericordia Place Personal Care Home for their kind attention and compassion over the past few years. A celebration of Lillian's life will be held on Friday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully accepted in Lillian's honour, by: The Winnipeg Humane Society, https://www.winnipeghumanesociety.ca/, The Winnipeg Public Library, http://wpl.winnipeg.ca/library/ contactus/donations.asp or The Learning Disabilities Association of Manitoba, https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/9330. I am 56 years old and was in Mrs. Hoey's grade one class at Lord Wolesley School. I am now an educator. I have not forgotten her and her dedication to her students. How nice to hear that she had a long life, blessed with a large family, and a long happy marriage. May she rest in peace. - Posted by: Kim Ozuk (Student) on: May 15, 2018
