JAMES MIZUNO James Mizuno passed away peacefully at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Molly, his wife of almost 59 years, and his children, Wendy (David Cain) and Glenn (Darlene) were by his side. Dad was a proud man who worked tirelessly throughout his life. He worked at Acme Chrome Furniture for 43 years and retired in 1998. In his retirement, Dad was happiest as he spent all of his time with family and friends, taking care of his home and chatting with the neighbours as he did the yard work. He never took anything for granted and was kind, loyal and very respectful of those who touched his life. On April 11, 1933, Dad was born in Ocean Falls, British Columbia. He was the eldest of six children to mother Tsujiko from Shirakawa, Gifu-ken, Japan and father Shintaro from Nagoya, Aichi-ken, Japan. His parents immigrated to Canada and settled in Ocean Falls. In 1942, when the Second World War broke out, the family was relocated to Vancouver and soon after was interned in Slocan, BC. After the war ended in 1945, the family was relocated to Tashme, BC. Final relocation placed the family in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan in 1946. In 1947, the family decided to move to Curtis, Manitoba. To help support the family, Dad worked with his Mom on a sugar beet farm. He was fourteen and worked there for seven years. In 1953, Dad, his brother Jack and sister Aiko moved to Winnipeg to find a home for the family. The three worked very hard and were soon able to purchase a house on Toronto Street. A year later he met Mom and they were married on May 16, 1959. Dad is survived by his wife Molly; children, Wendy (David Cain) and Glenn (Darlene); sister Aiko Furuya, and brothers, Jack (Judy), Roy (Sue), Tom and George, sister-in-law Jean Furukawa and several nieces and nephews. Dad will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We would like to thank Dr. Paul and Dr. Lipschitz and the staff at Health Sciences Centre for their support and care. A special thank you to incredible friends, Brenda Peters-Watral and Walter Watral who attended all of Dad's appointments, and provided the family with much appreciated support and compassion. As per Dad's wishes, there will not be a service after his cremation. However, our family knows and appreciates that those who were in his life are thinking of him. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation.
