JOE (JOSIP) SMEDEROVAC Passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 13, 2018, with family by his side, at the Selkirk Regional Health Center, Joe Smederovac, aged 79 years, of St. Andrews, MB. Joe leaves to mourn his wife of 53 years, Myrla; his sisters, Emily Kekec and Mary Kraljevic (John); brothers, Mike (Margaret) and Douglas (Donna); sister-in-law Mary and brother-in-law Garry Cruickshank (Fran). Joe was loved and will be missed by many other family members and friends, including numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Joe was predeceased by his brother John and his parents, Katherine and Michael. Born in D. Stative, Karlovac, Croatia, Joe immigrated to Canada as a teenager. Joe quickly took to Canadian life and enjoyed his long career as an auto mechanic. He also enjoyed music and spent several years as a member of a local dance band. Interested in many sports, Joe had a passion for hockey, which he fulfilled by volunteering for many roles in the Selkirk Steelers organization. Excited by the return of the Jets to Winnipeg, he has been an avid fan. Joe was also a longtime fan of the Blue Bombers. Joe enjoyed many rounds of golf with family and friends at the local course. He spent many happy times with the new friends that he made during the 17 winters that he and Myrla spent in Mercedes, Texas. He took pleasure in his yards in both Selkirk and Texas, especially his fruit trees and gardens. He was always willing to help out when he could, and was quick to offer his mechanical expertise to solve a problem. His skill at the barbecue was well known by friends and family, especially for his Croatian shish kabobs and prime rib. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, MB. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9, or to the Selkirk & District Community Foundation, 200 Eaton Ave., Selkirk, MB R1A 0W6.
