HJORDIS ANDERSON 1918 - 2018 Hjordis Josephine Anderson passed away on May 14, in her 100th year. Her family gives thanks for her long and beautiful life. She was the best wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother that anyone could wish for. We will miss her beyond measure, but we share her joy that she is now with her Lord and her beloved husband Gordon and son Jon. Hjordis was born on November 28, 1918 in Blair, WI to Haakon and Hannah Schansberg. She was the youngest of six children and survived her brothers, Robert Westerlund and Al Schansberg; and sisters, Lucille Westerlund, Irene Benson and Helen Tollefson. She felt blessed to have grown up in a loving family and a small close-knit community. Hjordis graduated from the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis and did secretarial work at the Old Dutch Company and General Mills in Minneapolis. She met Gordon at General Mills and they married in 1942 in Phoenix, AZ on the day Gordon received his Air Force wings. They lived in Boise, ID and in Florida during the Second World War and when Gordon returned from serving in Europe in 1945, they purchased Hjordis' family homestead farm near Blair WI. They left the farm after five years so that Gordon could attend university. Hjordis always joked that she had earned a PHT - Putting Hubby Through. She worked as a secretary at both Wisconsin State Teachers College and Michigan State University, as well as the Watkins Company in Winona, MN. In 1959, the family moved to Winnipeg. Hjordis worked for many years at the University of Manitoba as secretary to the Vice President/Comptroller. Her excellent secretarial and organizational skills found her in leadership roles in many of the organizations that she belonged to, including the Evangelical Lutheran Church Women, Fort Garry Chimo Toastmistress Club, of which she was a founding member, The Scandinavian Cultural Centre, The Norwegian Canadian Club and The Crafts Guild of Manitoba. She was a faithful member and servant of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Seemingly, Hjordis had unbounded energy. She was the heart of the family, always giving her children and grandchildren the most important gifts of her time, attention and unconditional love, while working outside of the home and pursuing her many interests. She taught by example. Friends, too, were always a special part of her life. She made a point of staying in touch with friends from all times and places in her life. Hjordis was proud of her roots; she researched her family history, faithfully attended family reunions, became proficient in the Norwegian language, rosemal painting and hardanger embroidery and travelled to Norway. She also loved to garden, made quilts for Lutheran World Relief with her church friends, painted and sketched and enjoyed camping, canoeing and fishing with her family. Gordon was always proud of the way she embraced each relocation and bloomed where she was planted. She and Gordon lived briefly in Ottawa and Charlottetown, PEI as empty nesters. Following Gordon's death, she left her home of 50 years in Fort Garry and lived at Dakota House and at Golden Links Lodge. She was very appreciative of the wonderful caring home care and Golden Links staff. Her family extends a special thank you to all of them. Hjordis will be lovingly remembered by daughter Jane and son-in-law Darryl Sjoberg, daughter-in-law Gina Anderson, grandson David Anderson, grandson Ken Sjoberg, grandson Kirk Sjoberg and wife Sara, great-grandsons, Karl and Calvin Sjoberg and many special nieces and nephews. Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of Hjordis' life will be held for Winnipeg friends at a later date. The family will gather at Rest Haven Cemetery in Blair, WI for her interment service. If friends wish, donations may be made to Canadian Lutheran World Relief, 600-177 Lombard St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0W5 or to The Scandinavian Cultural Centre, 764 Erin St., Winnipeg, MB R3G 2W4. An obituary notice with Celebration of Life details will follow. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Mrs. Anderson was a treasure to the local Scandinavian community, and such a wonderful friend to both of my parents. I am forever grateful to her kindness to all of us through so many years, and I recall how she and my mother would have frequent phone conversations whenever they weren't meeting up at the Norwegian lunches. From what I remember, she and her husband were there at all of our family events - wedding, funerals, baptisms. I had it in my daytimer this month to stop in and see her, as it had been far too long whilst I was caught up with raising kids and work. She will be sorely missed; what a well lived life. - Posted by: Karen Kampen (Family friend) on: May 20, 2018
