RITA ABRAHAMS (nee DYCK) Peacefully, on Sunday, May 20, 2018, Mom left us to be with Dad. Rita was the youngest of ten children born to Sara and Peter Dyck. She celebrated her 79th birthday on March 30. Forever holding close her memory are sons, Kevin (Robyn, Paul, Blair) and Eric (Alex) and daughter Janice Land (Patrick, Andrew, Tristan). She also leaves two sisters, four brothers, extended family and many friends. She was predeceased by her husband Herb, her parents, one sister, and two brothers. Rita found the love of her life in Herb, and they were married in 1959. During their life together, until Dad's passing in 2014, they enjoyed travelling and made trips through Canada, the US and Europe. Mom was an avid supporter of her childrens' activities, be they sports, music or school events. Oma was also an enthusiastic spectator at the grand-childrens' games. She played ringette and later curled and snowmobiled. In 2000 Herb and Rita moved to West Hawk Lake and became very involved in their community as new permanent residents. Rita was involved with the South East Whiteshell Fire Department. She was a big part of the department's annual Open House. Rita recently "retired" to Niverville, immediately becoming involved in various activities and volunteer work, making many new friends in the process. Rita loved being with people. She loved to be surrounded by family and friends, playing cards and sharing laughs. She was always happy to beat any challengers in a game of cribbage. Cheering on her sports teams (curling, football and hockey) was also a serious pursuit. During Mom's illness, the words of comfort from the many visitors, both at home, and l ater at the hospital, meant so much to her. The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Morris General Hospital for their wonderful care during this time. A special thanks to Martha and Anne for their above and beyond support during Mom's illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Southeast Whiteshell Fire Department or a charity of one's choice. A memorial service will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, on Friday June 1, 2018 at 10:00 am. • Dear Abrahams Family: My deepest condolences. Rita was always so friendly and cheerful. I enjoyed visiting with her, and will remember Rita's smile and laugh. Always hard working, Rita had a strong sense of motivation and determination. Her family was the light of her life, and will be very missed. Many hugs to you all, Andrea B. • She was a delight to have in our lives in West Hawk Lake. Rita and Herb will be missed out here. - Posted by: Shannon & Keith Henwood (Friends) on: Jun 02, 2018

  • In my formative years, I quickly recognized both Rita & Herb as respected parents to a great friend (Kevin) and venerable fixtures in their Sturgeon Creek community - the kind of people whose hard-work could take something already good and make it great!!! As I grew older, the generation difference seemed to fade and my relationship with Herb & Rita grew to be one of trusted friends. It was the kind of friendship where you always felt welcome in their home and comforted knowing one would always feel a whole lot better after having enjoyed a visit - even if it included a being delivered a humbling defeat (or two) at the crib table. For whether it was a fleeting visit in Winnipeg or an overnight stay out at West Hawk Lake, there was always a reliable abundance of mirth & caring that was undeniable present whenever our paths crossed. I will forever remember Rita & Herb as both being of the “best quality” regardless of the context. Moreover, they were “character people” who could be counted on to do the right thing no matter the situation and regardless if anyone was watching. Mrs. Abes and her friendship will be sadly missed ─ just like Mr. Abes’ before her. Yet the positive spirit and myriad great memories will endure. And I am forever thankful for that. To Kevin, Robyn, Paul, Blair & both Janice, Eric and your families, please know how utterly sorry I am for the loss of your dear matriarch. This world was always a whole lot better with Herb & Rita in it. And now the heavens are undoubtedly the same. - Posted by: Yogi Henderson (Family friend) on: May 29, 2018
