Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryG. EILEEN BATE (GARRETT) (nee DAVID) G. Eileen Bate (Garrett) (nee David) passed away peacefully, on her own terms, at the age of 95+ (June 25, 2018). Eileen was born in the Killarney area to Pearl and J.A. Victor David and was educated in Oakridge and Killarney schools. Upon graduation, with the Second World War raging, she remained to work the farm with her father, did substitute teaching and soon joined the R.C.A.F. (Women's Division). During those years, Eileen met Bruce Garrett from Niagara Falls, ON. They married in 1946. It was here that daughters Bonita and Elaine were born. Thirteen years in Niagara Falls was followed by 13 years in Richmond Hill before Bruce's failing health forced them into early retirement and a move to Killarney in 1972. Bruce died in 1975 and Eileen married E.J.C. (Bun) Bate in 1978. He passed in 1999. Eileen had an active life. She loved sports: curling, golf, softball, gardening and knitting for charity. While living in Ontario, Eileen organized and was president of the brand new ladies curling clubs in both Niagara Falls and Richmond Hill, teaching the game to well over 300 women. She started curling at 10. In Killarney, Eileen organized the town's first farmer's market and went on to become their first female Councillor serving over 12 years as Councillor and Deputy Mayor. She received a Life Membership from Manitoba Municipalities. In 1986, she was nominated for the Woman of Distinction award for the Brandon region. Eileen moved to Winnipeg in 2000 making many good friends through her bridge clubs and church. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother Charlie in 1929; her husbands, Bruce and Bun; sister Doris Southern, two brothers-in-law; and her nephew. She is survived by her daughter Bonita Garrett (Stephen Nicholson); daughter Elaine and her two children, Angela and Adam Enns; four great-grandchildren; sister Mary Murray, her children and families. At Mom's request, cremation has taken place. A private interment in Killarney will be held at a later date. MacKenzie Funeral Home Stonewall 204-467-2525 info@mackenziefh.com

I met Eileen very shortly after her move to Winnipeg. She ended up being a neighbor at River Rock on the Seine, the condo we moved into in 1999. Her daughter Bonita was a great friend of my mother and I was so pleased to meet her mother. Eileen became a "cribbage buddy" of my dad's when he moved into the same building. She was a fun person to be with, she and I shared many meals, conversations, feelings, jokes, and lots of laughter. I really appreciated her being in my life and will miss her presence there. Rest in peace dear lady, and know that you were loved. - Posted by: Margaret Glew (Friend) on: Jul 02, 2018

The bond of a friendship grows from sharing good times and bad times and I could not have asked to meet a better friend than Eileen. We spent many wonderful times together over the past 16+ years with countless games of bridge (one of her passions and mine), and the many visits sharing stories of her life. Though she is gone, my memories of her are forever and I will miss her so very much. Bonita & Steve and all her family: my words cannot lessen the sorrow of losing your Mom but as time goes by, may you find comfort in the memories of all the things that made her so special. Love and prayers always. - Posted by: Sylvia Lindaas (Friend) on: Jun 29, 2018

Eileen was my neighbour and became a dear friend. Many times I would walk down the hall and knock on her door and she always had time to chat. We had many good times and lots of laughs. She shared many stories of her life and she always had lots of wonderful details. She spoke of her two daughters and two grandchildren and her great-grandchildren with such pride and love. She was a wonderful friend and I will miss her very much. - Posted by: Dianne Wilde (Friend ) on: Jun 28, 2018

My Aunt Eileen was the anchor in our lives. She lived life full and complete, and told me she had no regrets. Worked like a man on the family farm, then served with the Canadian Army in WW II. She raised her own family, but always opened her doors for those like me that just needed a place, or someone to talk to. Many lives shared her time and her heart, and she will be missed. Like she lived her life, she made her own choices. I hope you can help Mary find her way too. Thank you for sharing. David - Posted by: David C Murray (Nephew) on: Jun 27, 2018
