WALTER HAGEN 1940 - 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Hagen on Monday, June 25, 2018, in the comfort of his own home, at the age of 78. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Gail, sons, Todd (Kim) and Ted, daughter Maris (Mike) Thompson, and grandchildren, Chelsea, Clayton, Carlie, Summer and Coleman. Also surviving are brothers, Carl (Lynne), Neil (Gloria), and sister-in-law Janet (Bob). Walter spent his childhood years growing up in the tight knit community of Weston. He had many fond memories of his school days, playing outdoor hockey and causing general mischief with his friends. Following school Walt started his career in the printing trade working for several shops over the years. He completed his career as production manager at the Manitoba Co-operator retiring in 1999. He met the love of his life at Laclu and chased her out to BC with the excuse being attending a Grey Cup. Things went well and they were married in 1965. They lived in BC for a short time but the call of Laclu drew them back to Winnipeg where they built their life and family. Sports were a big part of Walt's life, whether it was coaching his kids, watching his Bombers and Jets, playing golf, racquetball, or spending time on the ice with his buddies from the Midnight Flyers. His latter years had been complicated with several health issues. Being fiercely independent he set his own standard of living safely with Parkinson's. We admired his never give in attitude. A perfect example of this was his latest and greatest passion of lacing up a pair of boxing gloves at the United Boxing Centre with his Rock Steady Parkinson's group. A celebration of Walter's life will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue. In lieu flowers, donations can be made to Parkinson's Society Manitoba, 414 Westmount Drive, Winnipeg, MB R2J 1P2. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

  • I am so very sorry Gail to learn of your husband's passing. I only just saw it on the internet. I've often thought of you since we last worked together at St.B. and wondered how you were. You often talked about Walt, the boys and Maris and I felt like I knew them too. If you would like to get in touch to say 'hello', I am on Fb as Rae Poole Reid. My sincere condolences to your whole family. Rae Reid - Posted by: Rae Reid (friend) on: May 18, 2022

  • I just found out about Walter's passing. Deepest sympathy to Gail and family. We used to exercise together on Wednesdays before he discovered RS Boxing. Always a twinkle in his eye, and a mischievous grin just under the surface. A great guy, always looked forward to seeing him. - Posted by: Doug Jentsch (fellow Parkinson warrior) on: Jul 20, 2018

  • My condolences are with you for your loss. Both Walter and Carl were good friends of mine when were much younger. Walter and I spent a lot of time together when we worked at Stoval-Advocate Printing in Winnipeg. I still remember the Grey Cup trip Walter made to Toronto for the famous "Fogged Out" game. Walter and I travelled together to learn some of the new printing trades in Colorado Springs. My wife and I made the trip one summer to Laclu to visit the Hagen family while we still lived in Winnipeg. Please give my regards to Carl and your family. - Posted by: John McCormick (Walter and I were Apprentices in the Printing trade.) on: Jun 30, 2018

  • Kim and family - My sympathies on the loss of your father-in-law. - Posted by: June Donnelly (Friend) on: Jun 30, 2018

  • Sorry to hear of Walt's passing, he will be missed. I will always Walt and his brother Carl at the annual Regatta boat races held a Miller's beach. The boat race took place on Saturday evenings at the wiener roast just before the dance a Webb's. The rules were: You all lined up at the start and when the gun went off you had to open the throttle full speed. All motor boat sizes participated from 3 HP to about 50 HP in those days. The race headed towards Malby's cottage and there was a person in a boat with a flag that they raised it to signal when all boats had to turn around and head back to finish line at Miller's. All boats had to turn around at full speed giving everybody a fair chance. So Walt and Carl in their Owens boat with 45 HP Royal Scott would both lean as far back in their boat when the gun went off to keep it from getting up on plane too soon. This was in the days before power trim. On the way back they would move forward to allow the boat to plane at full speed. I don't remember if they ever won but probably did. There were quite a few times smaller boats won the race because they could turn around faster. I always looked forward to enter that race but when I was old enough the race wasn't held anymore. Could be because Jim Miller flipped his boat in front of the crowd one year. It's too bad won't be able to be at the 100th anniversary Regatta this year but a great many people will be thinking of him and his family. - Posted by: Paul Tilley (Fellow Laclunatic ) on: Jun 30, 2018
