JEAN REDSTON We are very sad to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Jean Redston, peacefully, in her sleep, on June 23, 2018 at the Grace Hospice. Jean led a full and vibrant life for 97 years and was predeceased by her beloved husband, Christopher Philip Redston in 1984 and four of her siblings (Evelyn, Bob, Fran and Ron). She is survived by her children, Jim Redston (Suzanne Vear-Redston) and Nancy Laxdal (Ken), and grandchildren, David Laxdal (Kristen), Jillian Roy (Dan), Marianne Redston (Jean-Pierre Matte) and Philippe Redston, as well as her six great-grandchildren, Leo, Lily, Julianne, Lennon, Jace and Thomas. She is also survived by her brother Jim Strang, sisters-in-law, Beverly Redston and Marilyn Strang, and brother-in-law Ross Forbes, as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and an extended family and friends. Jean was born at home in Dauphin, Manitoba on June 6, 1921, second of six children, of William Douglas and Susan Elizabeth Strang (nee Neill). She grew up in a strong farming community with many real life experiences of prairie living in the 1920s and 1930s. She often said her life was divided in three phases: growing up in Dauphin and as a single young lady working for the CIBC initially in Dauphin, and then to Winnipeg. Then happily married in 1950 to Chris Redston, followed by a growing family and many great friend and family relationships especially with the Redston and Strang relatives. Then as a widow, living on her own, but always maintaining very strong bonds with many friends and family. High moral standards, intelligent, very strong sense of right and wrong, always wanted to remain independent; she gained huge respect within the family as our matriarch and role model for younger family members and ourselves. Mom absolutely loved people, she enjoyed the many visits of friends and family. Her eyes lit up with the grandkids visiting and during the many round table discussions at meal time or in her living room. She was especially fond of her great-grandkiddies. Mom was a passionate bridge player, an avid golfer and curler. She continued her CIBC career in the mid 1960s, and was well respected by managers, staff and co-workers. Long standing member of St. Paul's Anglican Church and the Wildewood Club in Fort Garry, she loved the ambiance and community of Wildewood Park where the family lived for some 35 years. When you live to be 97, you outlast many friends and family. Not without adversity, she lived a healthy life, but it was ultimately cancer and old age that was the final straw. Her mind was sharp and lucid to the end but her body could not keep up. A Celebration of Life for Mom will be held for family and friends on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard. Very special thanks to Dr. Rowland Hayward who was her long serving family physician and gave her excellent care and advice. Also to the staff at the Grace Hospice who provided excellent care in more difficult times. We would also like to recognize the staff of CancerCare Manitoba, WRHA palliative and home care, and her team of devoted doctors who cared for her over the last many years.
