PAUL RAINONEN March 11, 1946 - July 4, 2018 Paul (Paavo) Sakari Rainonen died on July 4, 2018, at his home, at the age of 72 after a long struggle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his son Brendan (and Peta-Gaye) and his sister Tuula (and Richard) Gross, as well as Brendan's mother Sheila Rainonen. Paul was predeceased by his parents, Maire and Pauli. Paul was born in Turku, Finland and his family moved to Canada in 1951, settling in Winnipeg in the Wolseley area where Paul went to school. Paul studied to become a computer programmer/ systems analyst and worked in the IT sector for various employers for most of his career. He enjoyed his time at the family cottage at Pointe du Bois, especially taking photographs. Paul loved music, especially jazz, and still had at least 300 vinyl records. He was a reader with eclectic tastes, enjoying books about cars and sports as much as history and politics. The family would like to sincerely thank CancerCare Manitoba, Home Care, and Palliative Care for their ongoing care over the past three years, the Grace Hospital for his recent stay, and HomeInstead Senior Care for their 24 hour care and support over the past three months. He was treated with compassion and respect by all of you. Paul was cremated as he wished. An informal wake will be held at 1249 Dominion Street on Thursday, July 12 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society if desired. • We were very sorry to hear about Paul's passing. We are glad he is at peace now. Paul was a great neighbour and proud of his Finnish heritage. He and I kept each other well supplied with books and it was nice to know someone who appreciated the same authors as I did!! Any baking I took him was much appreciated and he loved raisin scones with lots of butter and Welsh cakes!!!!! He will be missed. Sincere condolences to his son, Brendan, and family. • With sadness we heard about the passing of Paavo, even when we did not meet him too often. We have been very good friends of Paavo's mother Maire and his sister Tuula: Maire talked a lot about her family and friends, in Canada as well as in Finland. Our condolences go to his family, especially to Tuula and Richard in Argenta. • Paavo will be truly missed at our beautiful point at Pointe du Bois. There were many happy times eating goldeye with a beer by the river, sharing wine and stories outside, or a brandy in his veranda. He certainly had some great stories and memories to share. He never needed an invite for Thanksgiving dinner, his spot was always there. He loved coming out for great entertainment provided by the Eronen family on dock putting in/ taking out weekends! You will be missed Paavo! - Posted by: Kathy Eronen (Neighbors at the cottage) on: Jul 08, 2018
