Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMARGARET YVONNE KIRBYSON It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of our beloved Yvonne at the St. Boniface Hospital on Tuesday, July 3, 2018. Born in Winnipeg on November 29, 1942, Yvonne was the eldest of Thomas and Fabiola (Lafrenière) Grafton's nine children. She leaves to mourn her loving husband of 55 years, Wayne Kirbyson, their precious daughter Susan and husband Jeff Stephen and cherished granddaughter Claire, the light of Yvonne's life. Grieving her loss are her siblings, Wayne Grafton (Jonine), Robert Grafton (Joy), Murray Grafton (Jessica), Neil Grafton, Judith Doyle (Paul), Mary Robertson (Bayne), John Grafton, Janet McCaffrey (Blayne) and their families. Also mourning her are brother-in-law Ronald Kirbyson (Dawn), and sisters-in-law, Jean McClelland (Jim) and Joann Kirbyson and their families. She leaves behind her aunts, Jeannette Rheault and Evelyne Lafrenière of Somerset, Manitoba, and many Grafton, Kirbyson and Lafrenière cousins. Yvonne was blessed with many friendships in her life, especially Gail Gowanlock, Rosemary Congdon and Brian Gibson. Yvonne spent most of her life in Winnipeg. She was passionate about education, a true lifelong learner. She graduated with her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Manitoba and taught Français for many years in The Fort Garry School Division, retiring from Vincent Massey Collegiate. Yvonne nurtured and fostered a love of learning within her students and showed care and compassion to her students and colleagues. Her wonderful sense of humour was treasured by all who knew her. She was an accomplished writer, and collector of stamps and coins. On June 29, 1963, Yvonne and Wayne were married in Winnipeg. Yvonne had studied and lived abroad with her husband in their early years of marriage. While living in Paris, France, she studied at l'Université de la Sorbonne. Wayne and Yvonne lived in Montréal, Québec upon their return to Canada in 1968, where Yvonne worked as a translator and also taught Français at The Hebrew Academy of Montréal. They returned to Winnipeg to be closer to family shortly after their beloved daughter Susan was born. Family was everything to Yvonne. She was a devoted spouse, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin and friend. Yvonne will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched and enriched. Yvonne's life will be celebrated at a Come and Go Luncheon on Friday, July 13, 2018 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Desjardins Funeral Chapel at 357 Des Meurons Street, Winnipeg. A private interment will take place at a later time. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital for the care and love Yvonne received during her stay. I just became aware of Madame Kirbyson's passing. I was a student of hers during her time in Montreal. She was a wonderful French teacher. My condolences on both her and and Wayne's passing. - Posted by: Abe Borzykowski (Former Student) on: Feb 26, 2020

I only recently came across this post and would like to express my condolences to Wayne and the entire family. Yvonne and I were in grade school together in Norwood for a number of years and even then she was a vibrant and very smart young lady. Yvonne was my "first girl friend". Took her to a movie when we were both 12. We remained friends for many years while we were both still in Winnipeg. My wife Mary and Yvonne both taught at Nelson Mac for a number of years. Many happy memories, which is the best way to remember someone. - Posted by: Denis Thomas (Old friend) on: Apr 13, 2019

Yvonne was a creative and gifted teacher and a wonderful colleague. She hosted a memorable Lebanese party for us. The girls made soanikopita and honey cake and dolmas(?) the day before. This was the real party as usual. Laughter and sharing in Yvonnes kitchen. The next evening with sopuses was so much mote staid. Less turkish coffee to wind is up. But like Yvonne the event connected people with each other. Schools are warmer happier places with teachers like Yvonne. Have a good journey my friend. - Posted by: Patti Johnson (Former colleague at Vincent Massey) on: Dec 08, 2018

Yvonne was my grade 9 French teacher at River East Collegiate and we would occasionally run into each other for a number of years thereafter. She was an amazing woman, warm-hearted, sympathetic, clever, and a great inspiration to me. I am sorry to hear of her passing. My condolences and best wishes to her family and all who were close to her. - Posted by: Karl Pfeifer (Former student (retired philosophy professor, now living in Melbourne, Australia)) on: Aug 05, 2018

I only met Yvonne later in life. I was standing at the wicket at the postal outlet at the old Stop and Go on St. Anne's. While standing in line, we struck up a conversation and it turns out that Yvonne is a coin dealer and I am a (very) amateur collector. Since that time, from the 80s up until last year, Yvonne and I had a standing April date to update my collection of US Presidents and US States and National Parks commemorative coins. I will miss our visits. My best wishes and condolences to Wayne and all of Yvonne's family and friends. - Posted by: Bill Coe (Friend) on: Jul 07, 2018

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Madame Kirbyson was my favourite teacher and Genies en Herbe coach. Her love of French Canadian literature was really inspiring, and she was a very kind soul. - Posted by: Kerry (Former student) on: Jul 07, 2018
