EDNA SIEMENS June 8, 1925 - July 8, 2018 The family would like to announce the peaceful passing of our aunt Edna at Riverview at the age of 93. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Tina Siemens, her sister Sarah, brother-in-law Jake Fehr, Tena Siemens, Helen, and brother-in-law Loius Werner, niece Pat and great-nephew Bruce Fehr. Edna began her teaching career after completing grade 11. She received a permit to teach 48 pupils from 6 to 16 years of age in a two room country school house. Her cot was in the kitchen where the rats and mice from the attic threatened a full scale attack on her every night. Fortunately a family in the district came to her rescue with a better place to stay and she stayed permit teaching for two years. She went on to complete grade 12 and teachers training and to then spend 16 years teaching elementary at many schools, nine years as a reading clinician, one year as a consultant for Alberta Early Childhood Services and 11 year in administration in Special Education. It was time for a change Edna went back to school and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1964 and her Masters in Education from the University of Alberta in 1973. She went on to hold several different positions and various offices in the Reading Council of Greater Winnipeg, the Metro Winnipeg Special Education Coordinators Association, the Special Education Administrators Association of Manitoba and the Manitoba Reading Association. There are many more memberships and clubs she belonged to in her 43 year career until her retirement in 1986. Upon retiring she travelled to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and Switzerland. She enjoyed spending time with friends curling, golfing, bowling, music, ballet, theatre and time spent at Caddy lake. The family would like to thank Riverview Personal Care Unit for their kind and compassionate care of Edna. A very special thank you to June and Albert Braun and their daughter Heather for the continuous attention, care and support they gave Edna during her declining years. Edna has been cremated and there will be a private graveside service for the family. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in memory of Edna to a charity of your choice. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • I first met Edna at Ralph Brown. It was my first year of teaching. Our friendship continued over the years with us both moving on into Winnipeg 1 Special Education. - Posted by: Bernice Stebbing (Taught together) on: Aug 05, 2018

  • I knew Edna most of life. She was a very good friend of my parents, Ed & Laura Wiebe. Edna was my mother's Maid of Honor at my parents wedding. They shared a bond through teaching, having both taught in 1 room school houses, and going to teacher's college. Edna also attended the same church we did for many years. She was a wonderful lady, with a great sense of humor. I'm very sorry to hear of her passing, and wish to pass my condolences on to her family. - Posted by: Mary-Ann Wiebe (Daughter of Laura Wiebe, Edna's longtime friend) on: Aug 04, 2018

  • I am the daughter of John C. Siemens, who was the son of Cornelius Siemens, brother of John Siemens. I believe you used to live on Prichard Ave. in Winnipeg. I am the genealogist in our family. Edna gave me the info about your family. Sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Edna Siemens (Great-niece ) on: Jul 14, 2018

  • Edna was a respected senior professional colleague over many years whom I met in the late 1960s at The Child Guidance Clinic. Later, we worked together in the Special Education Unit when she was the ASD. Our friendship evolved over many years and we met regularly for lunch after she retired. She was the last to survive of 4 daughters in her family. She missed each of her sisters forever, and cherished their children. 17 years my senior, Edna was a kind friend who lived with style and grace. She is missed by my husband, Ernie, and myself.
