MARY GODELIEVE DEMEYER (VAN TORNHOUT) April 24, 1921 - July 12, 2018 Peacefully on July 12, 2018, Mary DeMeyer passed away at the age of 97 at the Vista Park Lodge. Her children will sadly miss her: Marjorie Schade (Ken), Carolyn Staudzs, Charles (Janet), Sharon James (Fred Young) and Patricia Simpson (Monty). She is survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary is also survived by her sister Bertha Smith (Ron). She was predeceased by her loving husband Gerry; son-in-law Andy; parents, Germaine and Jules Van Tornhout and her sister Georgette Teffaine (Marcel). Mary was born in 1921 in Brugges, Belgium. She immigrated to Canada in 1927, eventually residing in Fort Whyte, Manitoba. Mary married Gerry in 1943. They took over the family farm where they worked and raised their children. In 1965, they sold the farm and moved to Fort Richmond. They spent the next years travelling throughout Canada, the US, New Zealand and Europe. 25 years were spent as "snow birds" in the south. Mary was a very caring person who loved and enjoyed her family. Mom had a real zest for life and was an organizer. Trips to the casino were always on her agenda. The family would like to acknowledge the caring staff at Vista Park Lodge for their caring and compassion for the short time Mom was there. As per Mom's wishes, a private Celebration of Life is being held. Donations can be made to The Children's Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, 840 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0Z3. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Mary Godelieve was the niece of my mother. Her mother was my grandmother's sister who emigrated to Canada around 1920 from Wingene (Belgium). My sincere condolences to all the family. I will always cherish the good memories of our visit to Canada in 1975 and her numerous visits to Belgium. All the best from Belgium. - Posted by: RONALD E DESSEYN (son of Mary Godelieve's niece ) on: Sep 08, 2018

  • I’m so glad I got to see Granny just a few days before she died. How lucky are all of us to have had her for so long! My kids were so proud to have a great-grandmother, and we will all remember her energy and joy whenever we were with her. No one has ever jumped up from her chair quicker, and no one's candies will ever taste as good. We will miss you granny,Love Karla, Stanislav, Stefan and Katherine - Posted by: Karla Karapetrovic (Granddaughter) on: Jul 15, 2018

  • To the whole DeMeyer family near and far. So very sad to hear about the passing of my grandma. I was very lucky to have finally meet her couple of times. My saddest thing is that she never got to meet my children or granddaughter. Thinking of her beautiful daughters and my dad Charlie, sending my condolences to you all. May she rest in paradise. Love your distance granddaughter, Tammie - Posted by: Tammie Guy (Granddaughter ) on: Jul 15, 2018
