JACOBUS VAN RAALTE It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jacobus on July 14, 2018. Jacobus (Jake) was born on August 3, 1928 in Amsterdam, Netherlands and came to Canada in 1954 with his wife Miep, and their son Walter. Their second son Michael was born in Virden, MB. Jake loved Canada and travelled throughout the country. He enjoyed all their family vacations and camping trips. He and his wife Miep referred to their move to Canada as just another adventure. Jake loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping even before camping was popular. He also enjoyed fishing with his two sons. When at home he enjoyed cycling (an activity he also did a lot of before coming to Canada). Jake will be remembered for his passion of gardening. He spent time in his garden right up until he no longer had the energy. He always loved to show off his garden to people visiting him at his home. Jake never gave up on anything easily. This trait kept him strong in his beliefs and gave him the strength to take on the challenges of starting a new life in Canada and raising a family. After coming to Canada, Jake worked as a painter in Virden, MB. He moved to Winnipeg shortly after to work for Metropolitan Construction. Not long after, Jake decided that working for others was not for him. He set out on his own as a self-employed painter. He taught his trade to his sons and at times worked alongside them with his oldest son eventually taking over his business for a time. Jake enjoyed his retirement, continuing his travels with his wife Miep right up to the time she passed in 2009. Jake was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Miep; his son Walter; his brothers, and his brother-in-law John Ouendag. He will be remembered by his son Michael (Kim); grandson Jason (Brigitte); granddaughter Cheyenne; step-grandson Andrew, and step-granddaughter Ashley (Denis). He will also be missed by his sister-in-law Dory in British Columbia; his sister-in-law Cheryl in Winnipeg; his nephews, and by all his family in the Netherlands. As per Jake's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no funeral service.
