LENARD GERALD ANTHONY December 13, 1937 - July 14, 2018 Len passed away at his spiritual home in Elma, MB on July 14, 2018. He is survived by brothers, Alexander (Don) and sister-in-law Joyce, Stan and sister-in-law Jean; four children, Kathleen, David, Heather and Paula Henry; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and his constant friend of 45 years, Leona Herzog, as well as her daughter Alexandra. Len was predeceased by his parents, Myrtle (nee Davidson) and Alexander Anthony, and his brother Brian. Len was an artist and master printmaker whose work affected many of his contemporaries. His expertise in photography and silkscreen printing benefitted a generation of artists in Manitoba and across Canada. He worked collaboratively with numerous printmakers in Winnipeg, and then at his studio, Atelier Ladywood, which opened in the mid 1970s and operated for over 25 years. In 1974, Len introduced silkscreen printing to the Inuit artists of Baker Lake, NWT, who went on to produce a number of acclaimed print series. He was artist-in-residence for eastern Manitoba for several years; travelling from Sprague to Lac du Bonnet, often with a potters wheel on the back of his truck, teaching classes in numerous communities. The last 15 years were spent in his Elma, MB; a place he described as "paradise". Gentle and unassuming, Len was at one with the universe. He enjoyed the trees, the river passing his property, the animals, and most of all the birds; which figured prominently in his work. He continued to paint and produce his own works until his passing. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, August 12, 1:30 to 4:00 p.m., with ceremony at 2:00 p.m., in the Buhler Gallery, St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg. In honour of Lenard Anthony and his love of, and his years of contributions to, the visual arts, please consider making a donation to the Buhler Gallery in his name. He enjoyed the Gallery very much, attended numerous openings with artists and friends, and exhibited his work there in a number of shows over the past years. Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • At 17, I helped my father renovate and paint the former Gable General Store and turn it into the Ladywood Atelier -- an artist studio / living space and museum. Working periodically over the next few years as the 'paper handler', I was very fortunate to work with Lenard and a variety of Manitoba's artists, including Jackson Beardy, David Umholtz and Robert Kost. A 'master printer', Lenard taught me "the kiss of ink on paper", how to register twelve colours to 1/32", colour-mixing and use of non-standard inks, and the value of the 14-hour workday. I got to know many of Lenard's closest friends, and went on to establish myself as an artist (in photography). As David Umholtz said to me, "I may not have money, but I'm rich like chocolate cake". That applied to Lenard, and I -- to this day -- describe myself as having been similarly enriched by him and his community of friends. I look forward to seeing you all at the celebration on Sunday. - Posted by: David Henry (Son) on: Aug 08, 2018

  • Lenard was a friend of mine for the past 20 years, we shared many good times together. All the best to family and friends. Tim - Posted by: Tim Neufeld (Friend) on: Aug 04, 2018

  • I lived beside Len when he was at the store in Ladywood, a very gentle soul who rarely said anything bad against anybody and was never negative. I remember us drinking "extra old stock" (both of our beer choices) in the store area eating jellybeans after the days shooting of the movie "maneater" with gary busey. like the extra old stock, Len is gone, but remembered. - Posted by: gregg pierce (neighbour) on: Jul 23, 2018

  • My thoughts are with Lenard's Family and Brothers Don and Stan and their Families. Although in the past I would only see Lenard at Family weddings but growing up I remember him as Uncle Lenard. He always had a smile and an infectious laugh. RIP Lenard. You will be missed - Posted by: Barb Bright (Sister-in-law to Brother Don) on: Jul 23, 2018
