NORMAN COWAN Peacefully in the early morning of July 19, 2018, after celebrating his 92nd birthday with close friends, Norman Cowan passed away at Poseidon Care Centre. Norm was born in St. James on July 18, 1926, and remained a lifelong, proud Winnipegger. Norm was well known as a charismatic gentleman with a unique announcer's voice. His good nature and constant willingness to help others earned him many friends throughout the city and across the country. His effortless ability to attract and bring people together served him well, particularly during his early days as Assistant Manager at the Capitol Theatre, where he met his loving wife and life partner, Patricia Cowan. Norm spent many years as Regional Public Relations manager for the CBC, and after retirement, took on a role as a consultant for a local marketing firm. Always wishing to give back to others, Norm was an avid volunteer and generously dedicated countless hours to help a number of non-profit organizations, including Juvenile Diabetes and the Manitoba Lung Association. As someone who truly appreciated the arts, he also enthusiastically supported Rainbow Stage for many years. He was an active member of the Khartum Shriners, and regularly helped organize the Winnipeg Press Club's "Beer and Skits" events. Through his incredibly vibrant life, Norm demonstrated a joy of living that resonated with all who had the good fortune to know him. Never having had children of their own, Patricia and Norm were dedicated Godparents to Kim, Kerry and Tricia, and Rod. "Uncle Norm" was always kind and supportive, and very much loved by them all. Norm was predeceased by his mother, father and sister. A private interment will be held to have Norm's ashes laid to rest alongside Patricia at Elmwood Cemetery. Those wishing to remember him, are encouraged to provide a donation in his name to the Manitoba Lung Association. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • It is with great sadness that I read this obituary. Uncle Norm was always larger than life, and the thought that this special gentleman has left us is sobering. However, knowing that he is once again with his beloved partner, Patricia, is comforting. May they both rest in peace. - Posted by: Colette (Friend) on: Aug 07, 2018

  • How sad I was to learn of Norm's passing. I worked with him for years at CBC, and as the obituary says, he was a very very good-natured guy. I have only fond memories of Norm...one of CBC Manitoba's best. Ms. Frankie Glickman, Victoria - Posted by: Frankie Glickman (CBC colleague) on: Aug 04, 2018
