GEORGE GELDARD FREILL Peacefully and with loving family at his side, our Husband, Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa went to his eternal rest on August 8, 2018. Left to cherish George's memory is his perfect match and loving wife of over 65 years, Shirley Freill (Jones); his children, Joanne (Doug) Watson, Gerald (Paulette) Freill and Robyn (Brock) Wolfe; seven grandchildren, four grandchildren-in-law, six great-grandchildren, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, the extensive Jones family, and many close friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Lillian (Geldard) and James Freill, his parents-in-law, Marie (Bonne) and Henry Jones, an infant granddaughter, and numerous in-laws. George was born on January 8, 1932 in Halifax, Nova Scotia and his family moved west to Winnipeg when he was still a young boy. He graduated from St. Paul's College (High School) and pursued a career with the North West Company, later joining Canada Cement Lafarge Ltd. and attaining the position of Production Supervisor, implementing plant improvements at their facilities across Canada during 36 years of service. This suited Dad as he was fond of travelling, and was keen to experience the many diverse areas of our nation. Retirement beckoned in the mid-1980s and he and Mom returned to Winnipeg, taking up square dancing, spending winters in Texas and travelling to visit his children and their families. George was a quiet, uncomplicated man of deep intellect and sincerity, and was most supportive of his children and their pursuits. He was always up for a hot dog, a movie (old westerns or sweeping epics), or a visit with family. Dad never turned down a cup of coffee. It's impossible to overstate what an exemplary person he was, in word and in deed. We are forever better for having been his family and friends. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Mary Mother of the Church, 85 Kirkbridge Dr., Winnipeg, Rev. Fr. Kevin Bettens, celebrant. A reception and inurnment will follow. Sincere thanks to Dr. J.B. Sharkey and Dr. L.R. Kroeker for decades of thoughtful care and the ER, 5A South, ACCU and palliative staff at St. Boniface Hospital who cared for George during his last days. As Dad would say, "you were all "A-plus"". In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made in George's memory to either the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation or the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.
