CURTIS MARK SOLMUNDSON Peacefully, with his family by his side, Curtis Mark Solmundson of Winnipeg passed away at Johnson Memorial Hospital's Palliative ward in Gimli, at age 54, on August 9, 2018. Curtis was predeceased by his mother Josephine (Zagozewski) Solmundson, father Edwin (Ted) Solmundson; sister Heather Skoropata, sister Colleen Solmundson, and father-in-law Fridrik Kristjon Finnson. Curtis will be lovingly remembered and terribly missed by his wife of 27 years, Lee (Finnson); beautiful, intelligent and caring daughters, Taylor and Lindsey; loyal and cuddly dogs, Milo and Aussie; and loving cats, Tigger and Cuddles. He also leaves to cherish his memory brother-in-law David Skoropata who took him in when his parents passed, niece Tamara (Conrado) Tualla whom Curtis had a special bond with and nephew Trevor Skoropata, brother-in-law Neil Finnson, brother-in-law Keith (Trudy) Finnson and nephews Nathan and Seth, his mother-in-law Josephine Finnson who was like a real mother to him, and finally special Uncle and Aunt Barry and Marlene Zagozewski who always watched over him. Also, many close friends and colleagues. Curtis grew up in Gimli, MB where he excelled in scholastics, sports and being goofy with friends. He looked forward to university in the "city" and was extremely proud of graduating as Senior Stick with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Pharmacy in 1987. While working in Winnipeg at a pharmacy down the street from Lee's new residence, Curtis rekindled his high school romance with her and they married on September 8, 1992 at Hecla Island. When daughters Taylor and Lindsey were born in 1997 and 1999 respectively, Curtis became devoted and dedicated to them. He loved their birthday parties, dance recitals, music recitals, soccer and volleyball games, and spending time with them and their friends. His main joy in life was guiding and watching them grow up to be kind, well-educated and productive women. His passion, other than his daughters, was running. He completed three full marathons in Manitoba, Ottawa and Iceland. Career wise, Curtis had reached his goal of owning Shoppers Drug Mart #535-Roslyn (formerly River) and Osborne in Winnipeg. Along his journey that was cut short, he met many wonderful people who became friends. Curtis was happy to spend his final months at the family cottage in Sandy Hook. It was a place of peace and quiet for him where he could listen to the wind rustling in the poplar leaves and watch the Pelicans in the lake. A Celebration of Life will take place on Friday, August 17, 1:00 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota Street, Winnipeg, MB. Lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba Foundation to be directed to Genomic Testing. Curtis and family felt he received amazing care from the health care system after his diagnosis and would like to acknowledge all involved. Special thanks to Dr. Piotr Czaykowski, Nurse Denise Klassen and Trial Nurse Kathi Klapp of CancerCare Manitoba, Nurse Julie Kumps and all staff caring for him in the Palliative ward at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli. Also thank you to friends, family and Shoppers Drug Mart staff who visited and assisted during this time. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE 204-949-2200 neilbardalinc.com

Curtis is the reason I still work at Shoppers Drug Mart. I met him 14 years ago at Shoppers on Pembina and Markham and followed him to his stores on Vaughan and then Portage Place mall. He was the kindest, happiest, funniest manager I ever had and treated his staff and customers as family. I would often stop in to Osborne Shoppers to say hi. I am so sorry that his wife, daughters and family have lost an incredible person. He will be greatly missed by everyone. - Posted by: Jasmine Arnold (Co-worker ) on: Aug 18, 2018

We share our love and sadness for the passing of Curtis. A genuine, wonderful man and exceptional Dad!! Our bond was through sports and even until recently he shared how he Loved watching his daughters play and the girls on the teams. I can still hear his "laugh" as we would sit together watching many a game. We feel very blessed to have had him in our lives and forever memories! - Posted by: Jensen Family (Friends) on: Aug 17, 2018

Curtis was an extraordinary individual, intelligent, gentle and caring, quick witted and funny. He will be missed by all that had the honor to know him. I will have some smarties and raise my glass in a toast to you my friend! - Posted by: Kathleen Scribner (Friend) on: Aug 17, 2018

My condolences to Lee and family. Curtis was a great athlete and scholar, and was humble about it which was part of his charm. In essence, he was one of the good guys, which is why it doesn’t surprise me that he and Lee have two wonderful daughters. Curtis was 6 years older than me but we ended up playing on the same beach volleyball team for several years after high school. Although we lost contact after beach VB, whenever we did bump into each other (usually at some sporting event for our kids), we would chat it up as though we were best buds. I’d like to share a story for everyone to embrace, (Lee has heard it several times and I’ve told it to his daughter once as well). When I was in grade 7 at Gimli High School, Curtis was in grade 12 and was a small basketball guard that played much bigger than his size. Although I was only in grade seven, I could see that he had great skills and court sense that I admired. I instantly said I wanted to play basketball the same way that guy does...I’ll never forget that. I’ll miss you! - Posted by: Eric Benson (Friend) on: Aug 16, 2018

I first met Curtis at Shoppers Drug Mart Store years ago...he was so helpful and so friendly and kind. Then we met again at the Shoppers in Osborne Village and we talked politics mostly. My condolences to his wife and family. He was youthful and charismatic and practically everyone in Osborne Village knew him and feels so bad when they hear that he passed. RIP Curtis...we will miss you. - Posted by: Natalie Pollock (friend) on: Aug 16, 2018

Our most sincere condolences to the Solmundson family and to Curtis’ Shoppers family. We have been customers of Curtis’ SDM pharmacy for several years. Curtis was a wonderful pharmacist.... beyond that, he was a wonderful person. His leadership seemed to set the tone for all his staff to be kind, compassionate and very conscientious. Curtis was never too busy to spend as much time helping us as we needed, never too busy to go the extra mile to find answers for us about our medications. He was such a warm person, truly interested in doing his very best for his customers. His pharmacy never felt like it was part of a “chain”, never felt cold and impersonal... it felt like “our” local pharmacy, where he and his staff knew us and we knew them. Curtis has seen our family through several health crises. His support meant as much, or more, to our family, as did the support of the doctors and nurses we encountered. We will sure miss him. I grew up in Gimli with Heather and the entire family. We became friends in kindergarten when we were 5 years old. I remember Curtis so well and was extremely sad to hear of his passing. My sister Jo Ann and I both worked at the Shoppers on River and Osborne years before Curtis even went into Pharmacy. To become the owner was a great accomplishment for him. The family has gone through so much heartache over the years. My deepest sympathy to his wife and daughters. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Lori Lee Arnason (Friend of Heather and Colleen) on: Aug 14, 2018

We came to know Curtis through Lindsay’s volleyball play. As cheering parents we spent lots of time together with Curtis and Lee cheering the girls on and having fun on VB trips. Curtis was easy to like and we really enjoyed his company. Our hearts go out to you Lee, Lindsay and Taylor. May God provide comfort and peace to you during this difficult time. - Posted by: Brent and Kelly Leung (Friends) on: Aug 14, 2018

My Dr. would often laugh - any new prescriptions had to be OKd by Curtis - he became my friend and my advisor - so kind so caring and so knowledgeable - I had total faith in him. Will miss him so. My condolences to his family and to his Shoppers family. He will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Eileen (Customer/friend) on: Aug 14, 2018

My sincerest condolences to Lee and her family. Curtis was one of my best friends in high school and we shared many laughs. While we lost touch over the years after I moved away following University, we seemed to pick up right where we left off when we saw each other at our friend Peter's house a few years back. I will never forget the kindness he showed to his friends, or the genuine joy he displayed when celebrating a friends successes. He will be missed, but never forgotten. - Posted by: John Sutton (Friend) on: Aug 14, 2018

Curtis was such a great friend and he will be truly missed by many. I met him in 2008 when he offered me a position when he was the associate/owner at Shoppers in Portage Place. I knew that from the first phone call, we would get along. He was always so much fun to work with. He would always talk about his daughters and tell me how proud he was of them. The one thing that he said to me after I was diagnosed with my illness was, "live your life with your babies. Enjoy and spend all your time with your family." Thank you my dear friend for the talks, advice, guidance and many laughs. My sincere prayers and condolence go out to Lee, Taylor and Lindsey and his entire family. - Posted by: Marie M-A (Friend/Co-Worker) on: Aug 14, 2018

For a very short while, Curtis was my pharmacist at Shoppers on Pembina. Very soon he became my dear friend at Shoppers. I loved our visits and occasional trips for coffee at the Sals. He was a beautiful man... gone too soon. My heart goes out to his family during this time of great loss! - Posted by: Jane Stuebing (Friend) on: Aug 14, 2018

My sincerest condolences to your family on your recent loss of your spouse and dad. Curtis was a great leader and mentor to those that worked with him and I hold the utmost respect for him for all he has done for our profession of pharmacy and for our company Shoppers Drug Mart. Always with a smile on his face and an encouraging word to say, Curtis was a man with integrity and honor that impacted all those he connected with. May our Creator and Lord comfort you all as you continue to grieve and adapt and rest in assurance of the promises given to us. I can hardly think straight. I'm devastated. I knew Curtis from when he was a really young boy. We reconnected in the mid-80's and had a blast, enjoying life and partying. A small group and I will remember him "Curt-dancing" down Center in Gimli after last call at the Viking. He suffered so much sadness and family tragedy in his life, yet always seemed so strong and positive. So many I know from my early life in Gimli are gone now, just this year alone. So sad. My sincerest condolences to all his family. - Posted by: Rob Krezanski (Friend) on: Aug 12, 2018
