EDWARD JOHN OTTENBREIT October 5, 1928 - July 25, 2018 Edward Ottenbreit passed away, peacefully in his 89th year, surrounded by the love of his family. He will be remembered and sorely missed by nephew Ron (Leann) Smith, nieces, Teri (Nick) Schroeder and Gloria Desorcy, extended family and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his sisters, Anne (Smith) and Josephine (Desorcy). Eddie was born in Winnipeg's north end to loving parents, John and Amy. At an early age he was stricken with polio and carried scars from that encounter for the rest of his life, but that did not stop him from sharing his special gifts with others, especially his gift for music. As a child, Eddie learned to play the accordion and the piano by ear, and developed a real love of entertaining. He began by playing for, and with, his family, and occasionally in a few small dance bands. Over the years he entertained at numerous fundraisers, non-profit volunteer events, Folklorama, family reunions, and house parties. In later years he began to play at a number of seniors' residences and care facilities on a regular basis, sharing his music and making people smile. Devoted to his family, Eddie also enjoyed a number of close friends, and being part of the community of St. Anthony of Padua. He was particularly proud of his membership in St. Anthony's Seniors' Club. He was an avid player of board games, and a regular at the Tim Horton's on Main Street for many years. Eddie loved a party, including everything from Folklorama and Festival du Voyageur to birthday parties and other family events. He enjoyed any opportunity to don a costume, wear a funny hat and, most importantly, make people laugh. We would like to thank our family and friends for their support and assistance during this difficult time, and Ed's caregivers for the excellent, loving care he received. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Anthony of Padua Parish, CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, or Consumers' Association of Canada (Manitoba). Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Thursday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, 250 Burrin Ave., Rev. Father Sam Argenziano presiding.
