KENNETH WAYNE HEWETT February 16, 1940 - August 17, 2018 We are saddened to announce the death of Ken who died peacefully at home in Vancouver of heart failure. He leaves behind his wife Anthea, sons, James and Peter, as well as numerous relatives across Canada. Born and raised on the family farm in Oak Bluff, Manitoba, he embarked on a full life, embracing all opportunities in education, work and sports. In 1964 he graduated from University of Manitoba in Civil Engineering and made many lifelong friends through Theta Nu whilst continuing with sports such as ice hockey, baseball and lacrosse and joining the Canoe Club. He worked as a foreman on the construction site of EXPO 67 and then took off for a number of months to explore Europe and the Middle East in a Citroen 2CV, having numerous adventures on the way. By the fall of 1968, he had moved to Vancouver in order to take his MBA at UBC, after which he worked for Crown Zellerbach for a year. He then joined Swan Wooster Engineering in the transportation department which took him to projects in Ghana, Pakistan and Turkey. Anthea followed him to Karachi and from there they went to Afghanistan and backpacked through Asia, as well as travelling throughout Australia and New Zealand, before starting a family in 1977. A career change took him into commercial real estate and project management of housing subdivisions in the Lower Mainland until he was forced to retire in 1994 due to back problems. Throughout his life he loved the outdoors - camping, hiking and kayaking, as well as playing ice hockey (Vancouver Flames), soccer, skiing (Bute Ski Club), and coaching his sons in hockey and soccer for many years in the community (Dunbar). Ken had a forthright and strong character, a sense of humour, loved discussing matters political and economic (the Sylvia Group), and embraced life in the full with his family and friends. Despite his health problems, he remained stoical and uncomplaining. He will be missed. We will be celebrating his life at the Oak Bluff Cemetery on Monday, September 24 at 11:00 a.m., followed by a lunch reception at the Breezy Bend Country Club in Headingley. A celebration at home in Vancouver will be held at a later date.
