MARJORIE RUTH YOUNG (nee GREENLAY) After a long and fruitful life, Marjorie Ruth Young (nee Greenlay) passed away peacefully on August 21, 2018 at the age of 90 years. Born in Portage la Prairie June 22, 1928, she enjoyed her childhood with her sister Verna and brother Gard on the family farm in High Bluff. Through the generosity of her uncle Earnest and Aunt Vi, Marjorie attended high school in Portage la Prairie, launching her long career as a teacher during which she continuously pursued and encouraged lifelong learning in others as well as herself. At the age of 19 she took a teaching position in Cypress River where she first boarded with Mrs. Richmond and then Mrs. Christie. There she met her lifelong friend Phyllis Turnbull and Jessie Matchett and soon to be husband of 61 years, Walter Young. Although Marjorie had five sons of her own to raise, she was also a foster mom through Foster Parents Plan to numerous children in Africa and South America. In 1961 Marj and Walter bought a house in Cypress River for $1900 and became very active supporters of the community. Marj was a director of the Agricultural Society, a board member of the Credit Union, Superintendant of the United Church Sunday School and Secretary of the Congregate Meals for Seniors Program. Marjorie loved her family, she loved teaching, and she loved gardening. She had a sharp mind and enjoyed silliness with her grandchildren. We will miss her tremendously. Marjorie leaves to mourn her passing her sons, Donald (Betty) of Winnipeg, MB, Robert (Michael Stecky) of Toronto, ON, Gary (Laura) of Guelph, ON, Neil (Debra) of Cypress River, MB and Keith (Therese) of Calgary, AB; grandchildren, Scott, Mark, James (Monique Olivier), Garrett (Christie), Caylie (Joey Tarko), Lena, Jesse and Nora, great-granddaughter Zoë, sister Verna McEwen of Portage la Prairie, MB as well as numerous relatives and friends. Marjorie was predeceased by her husband Walter (2013), parents, Cecil and Lena Greenlay and by brother Gardner Greenlay (December, 2017). A graveside service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Glencoe Cemetery with Sharon Hamilton officiating. Following the interment a reception will be held in the Cypress River Memorial Hall.
