I got home from work tonight and heard Len had passed away. I immediately looked across the street where he used to watch the neighbourhood. Len taught me to appreciate our Veterans and our family appreciates the price that was paid for freedom - more than ever. We would share toasts of Scotch on Rememberance Day and even on some Father's Days (and damn it I'm going to have one tonight). We would invite him over for pie, a beer, a chat - not nearly enough but enough to know he was really special. He welcomed us into the neighbourhood, and we loved chatting with him. His last summer at home I saw him nearly every day, and in his state we would have almost the same conversation every day. "Say young fella - it's been a while". We always gave Len whatever time we could. He was worth it. Len - I know there were many times you would walk out on to your driveway and have a shovel - expecting to clean up the windrow left by the snowplows, and be perplexed because it was already gone. Well I have to come clean - it was me!! I cleaned that up for you and I was glad every time I did. You made me a better person. Thank you for your imprint into our lives. Charles, Danielle, Katelyn and Jaxon. "What will you do when the war is over - tender comrade? When we lay down our weary guns? When we return home to our wives and families, and look into the eyes of our sons. What will you say of the bond we had - tender comrade." - Billy Bragg - Posted by: Charles Smadella (Neighbour) on: Sep 05, 2018

Len was my neighbour when I was a child and later as an adult when I bought my parent's home. My Dad and him would often chat over the fence, and often have a beer. He would always have a smile on his face and a story to tell. The same traits carried on when I was an adult, he would pop his head over the fence every time he saw myself or my husband outside, where a beer would be shared and often gifting us vegetables from his garden. Len was a great man and a great neighbour, with always a great big smile. Rest in peace Len and condolences to the family. - Posted by: Marcy (neighbour) on: Sep 01, 2018

Len was one of the best if not the best boss I ever worked for. When I did not want to go back to Montreal with Flight Operations Air Canada, Len took a chance on me to work along side of him in Ramp Equipment Maintenance and he would train me. We were two pees in a pod when it came to personalities and we did have our fair share of disagreements but they were always worked out and forgotten. He was a demanding but very fair individual and always stood behind his employees and give the what-for in private. It what my privilege and honour to work with such an honorable and caring employer - Posted by: Mike Smalley (co-worker) on: Aug 31, 2018
